"Peach, why are you sitting in the front yard?" Peach's mother asked as she stopped her bicycle and leaned it against the wall of the yard. She then strolled over to hold Peach's hand and headed into the house with her.
"Mom, I want to go to kindergarten too," Peach insisted while looking at her mother earnestly.
"You?" Peach's mother chortled, "You're only two years old, no kindergarten will take you in."
"I don't care. I just want to go," Peach demanded.
"Why?"
"Because my husband is there and I want to be with him," Peach explained, her doe eyes glistened and she had a look on her face that said that her decision was irrefutable.
Hearing her explanation, Peach's mother once again felt like her daughter no longer belonged to her.
Over dinner, Peach's parents discussed sending Peach to kindergarten. They felt that Peach was still too young and would not be able to take care of herself in kindergarten. Hence, they agreed to evaluate the situation again the following year.
However, Peach refused to give in. Seeing that they were unwilling to accede to her demands, she burst into tears once again.
This time, she bawled at the top of her lungs. It was so loud that everyone could hear.
Curious about the noise, their neighbours soon surrounded them, wondering if Peach's parents had abused her.
When He Yue and her husband heard Peach's cries, they hurried over to Peach's house. They had intended to mediate, but when they heard the reason as to why Peach was crying, they did not know whether to laugh or cry themselves.
Professor Shen, Shen Mochen's father, scratched his head and thought about it for a long time. Eventually, he proposed a solution, "The princ.i.p.al of the kindergarten is on fairly good terms with one of my colleagues. When I go to work tomorrow, I will try to see if I can pull some strings to enroll Peach in the same kindergarten as Mochen. "
a.s.sured by Professor Shen, Peach finally stopped crying. Drying her tears with a towel, she clambered up to her seat at the dining table to have her dinner. Suddenly, she looked up at Professor Shen and warned, "G.o.dfather, you must not lie to children."
Professor Shen chuckled and promised, "Of course I won't lie to my future daughter-in-law."
The next day, Peach woke up especially early and left her yard to wait outside Shen Mochen's house. She watched in silence as Professor Shen carried his bicycle and headed out the door for work.
Professor Shen felt helpless as Peach watched on. Turning around and crouching down in front of Peach, he a.s.sured her, "G.o.dfather will do anything he can do, to get you into kindergarten."
Satisfied with his a.s.surance, Peach moved aside to let him pa.s.s.
Initially, the princ.i.p.al of the kindergarten did not agree to Peach attending as he was running a kindergarten, not a nursery. The minimum age to enroll in the kindergarten was three years old, but Peach was only two. However, Professor Shen, with his silver tongue, managed to move and persuade the princ.i.p.al by insisting that Peach was his daughter-in-law. Eventually, the princ.i.p.al reluctantly agreed to allow Peach to join the youngest cla.s.s.
While that was going on, Shen Mochen was holding a paint brush and drawing intently in his cla.s.s. As an austere child who did not speak or smile often, Shen Mochen would usually not interact with the other children or sing and dance with the teacher. It made the teacher speculate if he was maybe austistic.
Fortunately, with Peach's arrival, Shen Mochen's teacher was relieved to see that he was a normal child with emotions.
The first day Peach entered kindergarten, she dashed straight over to Shen Mochen's cla.s.s.
