I was half through an empty soccer field, about to say screw it and take off the shoes, since heels plus running in gra.s.s equaled very unstable footing, when I saw a flash of green up in the distance. Vampire eyes, glowing in the dark. Screw the heels, full speed ahead!

I saw them just as Bones jerked his blade out of the vampire 's chest. They were on the ground inside a fenced new construction site. Mentally I let out a sigh of relief. At this hour, the crews were long gone. Good. No witnesses to worry about.

I came to a halt by Bones once I vaulted over the fence, my heart racing from adrenaline and the run. He gave the body a final kick and then turned to face me.

"You and I need to talk, Kitten."

"Now?" I asked in disbelief, gesturing to the dead vampire near his feet.

"It's not like he's going anywhere, so yeah. Now."

At once I began to back away. I'd been so caught up the past hour catching the killers that I'd forgotten things were very different between Bones and me. How stupid. I'd felt so comfortable in our routine of hunting down the bad guys that I'd let myself end up in a deserted construction site with nowhere to flee. If I were smart, I 'd have stayed back at the GiGi Club and let Bones chase down this last jerk himself.

Bones watched me edge backward, and his eyes narrowed. "Don't you move another step."

"I-I have to go back to the club, my team's on the way..." I hedged.

"Do you still love me?"

The blunt question almost made me trip. I looked away, biting my lip and hating myself for the lie I was about to tell.

"No."

He didn't say anything for so long, I dared a peek at him. Bones was staring at me hard enough to make me wonder if he was able to see through to the back of my head.

"If you don't love me, then why didn't you kill Ian? You had a knife in his heart. All you had to do was twist. Your job is to kill vampires, after all, but you let him live. It was if you were sending me a bloomin' valentine."

"Sentimentality." I grasped at straws. "For old time's sake."

His mouth twisted. "Well, luv, as the saying goes, no good deed goes unpunished. You should have killed him, because now he's looking for you. You made quite an impression. While I would never force you to do anything against your will, Ian wants to find you to do just that."

"What are you talking about?"

Bones smiled, but it wasn't pleasant. "He's enamored, of course. Ian's a collector of rare things, and there's no one rarer than you, my beautiful half-breed. You're in danger. Ian doesn't know I've found you, but he'll track you himself soon enough."

I mulled this over, and then shrugged. "It doesn't matter. I beat Ian before and I can do it again." "Not the way he'll play it." There was something in his voice that made me look sharply at him. "I know my sire. Ian won't just come at you one night and try to take you on in a fair fight. He 'll grab everyone you love first and then strike a deal with you, his terms. Believe me, you won't like them. Now, your one advantage is me. Because of your clever little description of our relationship, Ian believes you hate me and vice versa. Nice touch, that. Especially the money part. Still want a check?"

"I'll write you one if you leave," I muttered.

Bones ignored that. "Furthermore, you still have a price on your head. I told you in the loo that I'd been offered contracts on you before that I traced to their source, but I don't know who's behind this last one. He or she is being very discreet. So you have another threat hanging over you that's even more dangerous than Ian, and like it or not, you're going to need my help."

"Vampires and ghouls come after me all the time," I said dismissively. "If I need help, I have my team."

"Humans?" Scorn dripped from his tone. "The only way they'll be able to protect you is if they incapacitate the hitter by making him eat too much!"

"You are so arrogant."

Bones came closer until only a few feet separated us. "I'm powerful. More than you're aware of. That is truth, not arrogance. Every member of your team combined couldn't protect you as well as I can, and you know it. Now isn't the time for your stubborn insistence on going everything alone, Kitten. Whether you want my help or not, you're getting it."

"Dammit, Bones, how many times do I have to tell you that the biggest way you could help is to leave? I appreciate the warning about Ian, but if you stay around me, you're the one who'll be in danger. Don't worry about me, I can take care of myself."

His brow arched insolently. "And right back at you, pet. I'm not the least bit afraid of your boss or your band of merry men. You want to get rid of me? Then you'll have to kill me."

Oh s.h.i.t. I couldn't do that. h.e.l.l, I hadn't known how I could kill him when I thought he'd slaughtered an innocent family!

"Then I'll leave," I said, frustration making me reckless. "I ran away once; I can do it again!"

I was suddenly gripped in Bones's arms with my head tilted back, without seeing him so much as twitch for warning.

Maybe that was my own fault and not just due to his speed. I'd been so busy keeping up my emotional shields, I'd pretty much forgotten about my physical ones. And truth be told, I never expected him to bite me.

Yeah, I'd let my usual vampire guards down all the way with Bones.

His fangs buried deep into my neck. Just like that one time years before when he 'd bitten me, what logic told me should hurt only felt good instead. Really, really good, and increasing with each strong pull from his mouth. The strangest kind of heat flooded all through me, even though with my blood spilling into Bones, I should be feeling colder, not warmer.

Stop it, I wanted to say, but couldn't seem to form the words. What came out was a primitive groan instead. Bones tightened his arms around me, tilting me back, and licking my neck before sinking his teeth in again.

I jerked in pleasure even as a warning shot through me. Was he going to kill me? Change me into a vampire? Neither possibility appealed to me. Spots began to appear in my vision, a.s.suming my eyes were even still open. Add that to the roaring in my ears, which was either my heartbeat or the noise one hears right before pa.s.sing out.

My fists thumped on his back. It was all I was capable of doing to tell him to stop, since my mouth only seemed good for making little ecstatic noises. That's when I realized I could stop him, if I really wanted to. My silver knife was still in my hand. I could feel the cold metal of it in my fingers.

Bones must have felt it, too. He pulled back for an instant, drops of my blood staining his mouth like rubies, and then slowly, deliberately, bent to my neck again. The subsequent long, deep suction weakened my knees and sent such a rapturous shudder through me that I found myself thinking if I were going to die, at least I'd die happy.

But I didn't have to die. All I had to do was angle that blade and give it one good push to live. Bones wasn't restraining my arms. They were loosely around his back while one of his hands tangled in my hair and the other supported me. The gray encompa.s.sing my vision became thicker, the noise in my ears was almost deafening. It was him or me, because it was clear he wasn't going to stop.

My fingers gripped around the knife to thrust...and then relaxed. It slipped from my hand, which I used to press Bones closer instead. I can't do it, was my last thought. Besides, there are far worse ways to die.

FIFTEEN.

AWARENESS RETURNED A PIECE AT A TIME. First and foremost, I realized my heart was still beating. Okay, I'm not dead or changed into a vampire. Always a plus. Then I discovered I had a pillow under my head. More alertness revealed that I was stretched on my side covered by a blanket. The room was dark, drapes were shut. Arms encircled me from behind, nearly the color of my own. That's when I woke all the way up.

"Where are we?"

Who I was with wasn't in question, even though my head still felt a little cottony.

"In the house I'm renting, in Richmond."

"How long have I been out?" Silly details seemed important; why I didn't know.

"Four hours, give or take. Long enough for you to steal all the covers. I 've been listening to you snore and watching you coc.o.o.n into the bedspread, and I realized I've missed this the most. Holding you while you sleep."

I sat up, my hand going at once to my throat. As expected, it was smooth. No punctures or b.u.mps left to show what had happened. Bones had closed the holes with a drop of his blood, erasing any marks of what had happened.

"You bit me," I said accusingly, but with a lot less anger than I intended. It was either the combination of the juice in his fangs or blood loss that made everything seem not as...stressful. And I should be stressed. Even though we were still both dressed, I was in a bed with Bones, and that wasn't a good idea if I wanted to keep my emotional distance.

"Yes," was all he said. He didn't even bother to sit up, but stayed stretched out on the pillows.

"Why?"

"Many reasons. Do you want me to list them all?"

"Yeah." An edge crept into my tone. He looked too d.a.m.n unconcerned for my liking.

"Primarily to prove a point," he said, finally sitting up. "You could have killed me. By rights, you should have killed me.

You had a vampire sucking the lifeblood out of you and a silver knife in your hand. Only a fool wouldn't have wielded that blade...

or someone who cares far more than she's admitting to."

"You b.a.s.t.a.r.d, you bit me to test me?" I exclaimed, getting out of bed and then staggering at the sudden wave of dizziness.

Looked like Bones had cleaned his plate. "Bet you'd have been pretty f.u.c.king sorry if I would have sliced up your heart. How could you be so stupid; you could have gotten killed!"

"And so could you," he flared right back. "Frankly after years of wondering how you felt about me, it was worth risking my life to find out. Admit it, Kitten. You haven't gotten over me any more than I've gotten over you, and all your denial, lies, or the moron you're dating won't change that."

I had to look away. Hearing him say he hadn't gotten over me was like a velvet-covered hammer to my heart. I barely even registered the insult to Noah.

"It doesn't matter," I said at last. "It can't work between us, Bones. Nothing can change what you are, and I won't change what I am."

"Answer me this, Kitten. When it is just you and me, no one else, does it bother you that I'm not human? I know what the rest of them think-your mother, your work, your friends, but do you care that I'm a vampire?"

Actually, I hadn't thought about it under those terms. There were always other things to consider. Stripped of that, however, there wasn't any pause in my response.

"No. I don't care."

His eyes closed for a second. Then they opened with a blaze of intensity. "I know you left me because you thought you had to protect me, that I couldn't handle the obstacles before us. So you tried to get on with your life because you believed it would never work between us. But you see, I couldn't get on with my life because I knew we could work. I've been looking for you every day since you left me, Kitten, and I'm sick of being without you. You've had your shot at things, now let me have mine."

"What are you talking about?"

"I'm talking about trusting me, which is what you should have done over four years ago. I 'm strong enough to handle whatever your job or your mum could throw at me. You still care about me, and I certainly haven't given up on you. We can beat the odds against us, if you'd give us a chance to."

Oh, if only. G.o.d, if only it were that simple!

"Even if you take out my job and my mother, we're still doomed, Bones. You're a vampire. I meant it when I said I didn't care, but you will! What are you going to do when I grow old, just hand me some Ben -Gay for my arthritis? You'll want me to change. You'll resent me when I refuse, and it will destroy us."

He stared at me without blinking.

"For the record: I will never force you to become a vampire. I won't pressure you, coerce you, trick you, or guilt you. Is that clear enough?"

"So you're fine with me getting wrinkled, gray, decrepit, and then dead?" I asked harshly. "Is that what you're saying?"

Something that might have been pity flashed across his face.

"Kitten, sit down."

"No." A chill ran up my spine. Whatever it was, for him to look so compa.s.sionate all of a sudden, it must be bad. I'd take it on my feet. "You tell me. What don't I know? Am I dying or something?" That would explain his lack of apprehension over my growing old.

Bones got up and stood in front of me. "Haven't you ever wondered how long you would live? Ever truly pondered it?" "No." I laughed bitterly. "I thought I would get killed pretty quick with my job."

"Think past that," he went on. My heart began to pound. "You're half vampire. You've never been sick, your body heals at an inhuman rate, and you can't catch any of the diseases that afflict the living population. Even poisons or drugs need to be administered in ma.s.sive doses before they affect you, so what makes you think you would only live to an average age?"

My mouth opened to argue, but then hung loosely. In a way, it felt similar to the night my mother told me what I was, because denial was my first response.

"You're trying to trick me. I have a heartbeat, I breathe, get my period, shave my legs...I'm alive. I had a childhood!"

"You told me once your differences emerged most notably in p.u.b.erty. Probably it was the hormonal surge, the same thing which can trigger congenital defects in humans that increased your nosferatu traits, and they've grown ever since. Your pulse and breathing only make you easier to kill, but you're not human. You never have been. You just mimic them better than vampires do."

"Liar!" I shouted.

He didn't flinch. "Your skin hasn't aged a day since you left me. Not one line, not one furrow. Granted, you 're only twenty-seven and wouldn't be showing most signs of it until later, but still. There should be some difference in the pores, the texture..." He traced a finger down my cheek for emphasis. "But there's not. Then there's the blood."

My mind reeled. "What blood?"

"Mine. Didn't have a chance to tell you this before, because you left two days later. Probably doesn't make a difference in the big picture, but here it is. The night we rescued your mum, you drank my blood. Not just a few drops for healing, but a good two pints. That alone would add fifty years to a normal human's lifespan. To yours, who knows? Double, easily."

I reared my hand back, but he grabbed it before I could slap him. "You b.a.s.t.a.r.d! You didn't tell me that. You didn't warn me!"

"Would it have changed your decision? You thought we were both going to die that night, if you recall, not to mention you would have done anything to save your mum. And truthfully, you could live to be as old as I am without it. Don't take my word for it. Go see your boss. Look him in the eye and ask what he already knows. All the pathology they must have done on you over the years, I'm d.a.m.n sure he knows. That's why I don't have to pressure you into becoming a vampire. With your mixed heritage and the occasional consumption of my blood, you'll live as long as you want to, just as you are."

This couldn't be happening. The walls felt like they were collapsing on top of me. All I wanted to do was run from the truth and be alone, even from Bones. Especially from Bones.

Numbly I walked toward the door, but he blocked me. "Where do you think you're going?"

I shoved him. "Out. I can't look at you right now."

He didn't budge. "You're in no condition to drive."

I let out a bitter laugh. "Why don't you just open a vein for me, then? What's another fifty years, right?"

Bones reached out, but I jerked back.

"Don't touch me."

I knew some of what I was feeling was irrational backlash anger. The proverbial shooting of the messenger and all that. But I couldn't help it.

Bones dropped his hand. "Fine. Where do you want to go? I'll drive you."

"Take me home."

He held open the door. "After you."
