"h.e.l.lo?" His voice echoed across the surrounding street. The scene was vaguely familiar, it was a street not far from where he lived. 'I'm late.' Clay knew that he was supposed to go meet his friend but for some reason he wasn't sure why. Though this was nothing unusual, they would often meet in the evenings for lack of anything to do in the neighbourhood. He was still at the age where going out late and 'chasing the night' as his mum used to say was still the norm, they were young after all.
But somehow Clay felt uncomfortable, it was like something was watching him in the shadows. The street that he knew seemed different today, in fact it was completely empty. "h.e.l.lo!" the sound of his voice was the only thing that could be heard. Gooseb.u.mps build up on the back of his arms as he once more glanced around him from under the dimly lit street from the shade of the lamp post.
Hesitating, Clay felt an urgent sense of danger. His legs remained still. He couldn't move, yet he could feel it, a shiver that unconsciously spread through his body.
Clenching his teeth, Clay thought it would be better to go home instead of meeting his friend. He was sure that he would understand, it wasn't like they had made any plans. Urging his shaking body to move, he finally let go of the pole. However as soon as he did so, the scene around him began to change ever so slowly, things like the colour of the houses or the silent street. Though the light still shone from above him, things seemed to get darker, a faint 'stik stik' noise could be heard like the sound of something rubbing against each other.
Not waiting to find out what was wrong. The first thing Clay did was to turn around and run, no sooner had he turned around when he found himself face to face to a strange white masked creature that seemed to float hidden in the shadows. Eagle like eyes that pierced right into his body, and a sharp stark face that resembled a type of vicious canine, 'stik stik'.
Clay suddenly realised where the sound had been coming from as he looked at the apparition in front of him, it was the noise of its teeth grinding against each other as it eerily looked at him.
Backing away from the monster in front, Clay turned once more before running without paying attention to his surroundings. The street seemed to become a blur as he raced back home the way he usually did, from the corner of his eyes he could see the shadow following him. 'Left!' turning through an alley way he rushed ahead like he was sprinting a 100 meter race. Head down, he didn't notice the gaping mouth that opened in front of him as it still stared at him with its eagle eyes. 'Stik stik.'
Glancing up, Clay saw that he was running into the monster which had become like a giant, its face almost as big as door, a white door of death. It was too late to turn around or break, he could only close his eyes as his heartbeat began to beat faster and faster in shock.
"AAAHHHHHHH" the shout that exploded from his mouth was like the scream of a person falling down from a high height off a seventy story building knowing the end before it even appeared.
However this time it was different, instead of falling, the moment Clay entered through the door, his body began to undergo a strange burning sensation across his whole like he had been set alight. Pain flooded his body as the light began to become brighter and brighter, in this process, it felt like a part of him had been stolen, piece by piece. An empty feeling that contrasted sharply with the excruciating pain that he felt like ants biting at him from every part of his body without being able resist.
As this was happening Clay could hear a voice. It was like the call of a siren, awakening him from his crisis. A moment of respite. It was calling him but he felt powerless to resist. His figure began to disappear into the white door that had been opened for him. A change was happening to his body. He was awakening.
The sound of the voice became clearer and clearer the more Clay struggled to reach towards it. Though the pain still heavily laced his body, he became slightly more bearable as he walked resolutely forward with a goal in mind. 'This voice...'
Clay had heard it before, it was a voice that had appeared in his dreams before.
A step at a time, Clay struggled to move forward, his body was slowly crumbling to ash as the burning flames that had lit his body began to glow brighter and brighter. "WHO ARE YOU?"
