"Help us!"
"Do something you stupid tree!"
"Attack Him!"
"Do it now!"
"Why won't it move?!"
"Something's wrong. Retreat!"
"You're not going anywhere."
My voice was low as I got closer and closer to the group in front of me. The body behind me slumped to the ground, blood gushing out. I had lost count of the amount of elf parties I had run into at this point. It wasn't a large number, I just couldn't be stuffed remembering.
2 groups back, I finally got all the books I needed to understand the elf language. It really did clear some things up, especially when they screamed out at me.
Their bodies froze as I spoke to them. They couldn't believe that I could speak their language. It sounded like English out of my mouth, but from what Kuro said, it sounded like gibberish to her. I had started to give her the elf language books, after I was done. It could be useful later, and I had no use for them.
"How?!"
One of the screamed as my blade reached his head. I didn't stop to tell them, as I dealt with these garbage people. He raised his bow to try and stop my sword, but I easily swept past him before his arm even moved.
At this point in time my level was about 3 above theirs, it was a slaughter.
"Heretic, don't come closer!"
The mage in front of me screamed out as he scrambled backwards. Realizing that he was going to die he tried to start a chant, but I got to him quicker.
*Swish*
His dead body dropped to the ground as I chased after the others.
"Do something!"
One of the archers screamed towards the treant that towered above us. It was off to the side and didn't move. I could see its body move as it watched me ma.s.sacre the group. I didn't leave any alive, I had tried to get information out of these groups before, but they never talked.
They would layer insult on insult, as they spat at Ella or me. What I could gather from their incessant blather, was that we were considered heretics. Heretics to them were people that weren't elves. For one reason or another they hated Ella. She was tainted as they put it.
I couldn't reason with them, even if I wanted to, and I didn't want to. Looking at how they acted, I was of the mind they thought themselves superior than all others. Basically nutcases, I had nothing to say to them.
The last body dropped as Ella and Kuro moved over, we would rotate who would kill the groups at this point, as it was too easy. It had just been my go and it only took me 30 seconds. We had been able to get the jump on them and kill them fast. We had devised a way to tack them.
Well I say devised, but it was Ella that could track them. She could actually smell them. The first time I heard her mention, the fact she could locate them based on smell, I was dumbfounded. It didn't make sense how she could do it. She explained it, as having eaten enough of their meat, she could detect them a mile off. She was drawn to their delicious scent.
It was like a person being able to identify KFC from a block away, just from the smell of chicken. Once that thought entered my mind, I sort of understood, but was questioning when she developed this ability. She had never shown a skill like this before and I had even looked at her status page. This super smelling or locating skill she had didn't show up, it was just a plain ability of her body, which was even scarier.
With Ella being able to locate the groups that got close to us, we were no longer ambushed by them and could easily take them out. Being made up of archers and mages, once we got close they were dead meat.
Their levels had gone up from the first rag tag groups we faced, but were altogether too weak to beat us.
As the other 2 made their way over, I stared up at the hulking tree and looked at it with spirit vision. Since the start of the day, treants had been together with the groups that came for us, confirming my suspicion that the person who sent the treants was working with the elves.
Or was pretending to?
I couldn't tell for now, the first time I ran into the treant familiars they had attacked me in a group and I had dealt with them. But since they had shown up with the elves, they hadn't done a thing. The person controlling them, I gathered, could probably see everything that was happening in the fights and tell the elves where we were.
Heck if the treant helped them fight, the fight would be tougher, even though we would be able to still win. But they did none of that. The treants in every fight would stand still and not respond to the command of the elves, which meant they were still under their masters' control.
Without the help of the treants the elves would panic and make it easier for us to take them down. The elves would even curse at the treants, meaning that they weren't intrinsically allied with them.
I looked at the small connection that continued in a south west direction, I think I was close to where the Summoner was now. Nothing told me the fact; it was more of an instinct. I think they wanted me to find them.
The small green connection was flexible as it sprouted out of the head of the treant.
"I'll be there soon."
I thought I saw it give an almost imperceptible nod at my words and I smiled, I really wanted to meet this person. Now all I had to do was kill it. There was no use letting them live, the owner didn't seem to care for them much either. I walked over slowly and looked at its rough bark.
My spirit vision was still activated and my eyes couldn't help but be drawn to the green connection. The treant didn't move to attack and actually lowered itself, so that I could kill it quicker. My eyes flashed as a strange thought crossed my mind. It was like it had always been there and I had felt it the last few times I killed these things.
My mind flashed back to Ella who was eating the prowler meat and the black strands that appeared on her teeth. My instincts drove me, as I leaped up and went to chomp down on the connection.
I didn't know what overtook me, but as my teeth came into contact with the string, I felt something. I even tasted it, as a burst of energy and fragrance exploded into my mouth. It was fresh and light, giving me a delighted feeling. It only lasted for a second or 2, before it disappeared and I landed back on the ground.
Kuro looked at me with dumbfounded eyes, but Ella could feel what I felt and saw what I had done. She was looking curiously at the now broken green strand. After being broken it wobbled before fading away.
The green connection that had been going to the west was gone and I looked at the treant, that flopped to the ground, it looked like it was dead and I felt little to nothing from it.
Was the green thread letting it live?
I wasn't sure, but it was only after another 30 seconds, that the remaining spirit in its body disappeared and I couldn't feel its presence. That strand had been keeping it alive?
But how did I do that?
My instincts had driven me to do such a thing, but I had no clue why. It was interesting though, my teeth, or more precisely the power of growth, was able to sever the bond between the caster and their familiar.
This could be used at a later date, I was sure. I gave a small smile as we continued to head towards the west.
We were getting close now.
