My prayers went unanswered as the black wolf charged at me again.

Hurry up Ella!

I brandished my blade ready for another round.

*************************

*Blurgh*

"Ha."

"Ha."

I vomited out some blood and gulped in air as I stepped back from the black wolf. It had tired slightly since the fight had started, but it was still in a better condition than me. It may have some wounds over its body, and blood dripping out from a missing eye, but I was so much worse.

My left arm was cleanly gone after I had lost my concentration at one point in the fight. I had heard Ella scream out in pain and saw that the one of the remaining wolves had got its teeth around her shoulder.

In that fraction of a second I was looking away, the alpha had taken the chance to take out my left arm. Not to say that I hadn't screamed out in pain immediately and lost a huge amount of blood. But I had no time to do such things, as its next attack had sent me flying.

Somehow I had been able to last so long because of the repeated health potions that had smashed into me, as well as the magic potions. Without the regeneration skill as well, I would have died after a few hits. The skill really was a life saver, it helped to heal my cracked bones and keep me going. I don't know how long it would take to repair my arm. But at least I knew it would.

"Awoourgh!"

Finally the sound I had been waiting for finally came. I sent a quick glance while retreating and a smile touched my bloodied face.

'Father!'

I heard Ella's voice in my head, it sounded fatigued and I knew she had finally killed the last wolf. I could see her gripping the neck of the last surviving wolf and watched as she crushed it, before chucking it to the side.

Finished with that she started to make her way over to me and the alpha. The Alpha also looked in the direction Ella was coming from and confirmed that its pack had been killed. It let out the loudest howl it had since the fight started.

The howl was packed full of grief and I could feel its pain as it screamed out. I thought about my family that had been taken for me, and couldn't help but feel sympathy for it.

But even though I had sympathy for it, I couldn't change how the world worked, they had tried to kill us to live. And so we had to kill them to live. It was simple as that, I couldn't help their nature. I couldn't make it so this never happened.

Maybe if they had more intelligence this wouldn't have happened, but after interacting with so many people and even the elves who I thought would be more peace loving. I wasn't sure anymore if the result would have been different.

Well it couldn't be helped. I prepared my blade for the final bout as I looked at the sorrowful wolf. It could be thinking about regret, about how it should have never come down here. Everyone has regrets in life. But we could do nothing about that.

It finally stopped howling as it looked in Ella's direction, before turning away from me and her to look at the surroundings. It was looking at the dead bodies of its pack. I had no clue if there were more female wolves or others of the pack that weren't here. But looking at its desolate figure, I thought this must be everyone.

Maybe I would never see another wolf in these mountains. Well at least for the next few days, there would be no wolves in the surrounding areas.

Ella finally closed in on us and was on the opposite side of the alpha. It stopped looking around and turned back to look at me. I could see countless grief hidden in its red eyes and the hatred it had for me.

I faced it head on and thought to myself.

These were the eyes of a good person.

It was a funny as I was looking at a wolf, but they truly were the eyes of someone who cared for his family, his pack, his race. How many humans had that look in their eyes these days?

I really wasn't sure, as I closed my eyes and gripped my hand tightly.

I took in a deep breath and looked at the wolf. There was no hatred in my eyes anymore; there was only sorrow, pity and respect. I don't know if it could tell what I was thinking, but it also started to calm down and looked back at me with its eyes.

It would fight to the end, for its pack.

I respected that.

The pause in the battle happened for only a moment, but that was all it took.

Then it rushed towards me and I rushed towards him.

********************

*HA*

*Ha*

*Urgh*

I groaned lightly as I rested body. My back was soaked in sweat and blood as I rested on the dead corpse of the alpha.

It hadn't given up till the end and almost fought both me and Ella to a standstill. It had powered up tremendously after its last kin had fallen. I let out a small sigh as I rested my hand on Ella's head. She was also collapsed next to me and was gulping for air.

The fight had lasted for so long; I couldn't even determine how long we had been fighting. My eyes felt heavy as they looked over our surroundings. They focused in on Kuro who was walking around the area collecting the globes.

I didn't truly like the idea of her being the one to do such a thing, but at the moment I couldn't move. And I had to admit that she had helped during that last fight, without her giving us potion after potion, we would have surely died.

I had asked her for more after the alpha had fallen, but that was when I found out we had gone through all of them, except 1. I was shocked by the number we had gone through as I thought back to the stacks we had in her backpack. But after getting over my shock, I decided to save the potion. Regeneration could heal me.

The potion would be better used at a critical time.

I felt a small force nudge my shoulder and I opened my eyes, I hadn't noticed when my eyes fully closed, but I had fallen asleep for a short while. The sun was still up and it hadn't turned to night. But it was starting to get to evening.

Kuro was crouched next to me, with a tired expression. She left a backpack full of glowing orbs next to me, before moving to the side to sit down. She was also tired.

I looked down at the bag, but had no motivation to look in it right now. I would rest up a bit more before going through them.

So that's what I did, I spent the next 2 hours lying down as the sun continued to sink. Finally rousing myself I got up and started to collect all the bodies, I would be able to eat them and grow stronger. I couldn't let this chance slip by.

I moved slowly as I collected them and Kuro actually joined me. She had a long enough rest and wanted to help. As it would take too long to collect every single body, Ella was off to the side and was chowing down on some right now.

She was more spent than me after the fight and needed to replenish her energy. I looked in her direction before starting a conversation with Kuro. She had helped us a lot this time, but my thoughts always thought back to what Ella had told me this morning. I had to ask her a few things.

"Hey Kuro."

My voice wasn't too loud and was tamer than usual. She was surprised at the sudden conversation and took a second to respond.

"Yes?"

I looked her in her tired eyes and organized some of my thoughts.

"After this big fight, and how close we were to death, I realized I never asked you something."

She tilted her head in confusion, not sure where the conversation was going. If I had asked her this beforehand, I would have been able to tell quickly. As someone who has lived through this apocalypse, my question would instantly give away someone different.

"I asked you about where you were from, and how you were transported here. I even asked you about specifics of where you live, high schools and landmarks."

She nodded her head as her eyes drifted, she was thinking back to the time I interrogated her. My voice grew softer as I finally got my real question out, even for me, this was a personal question.

"But I never asked, what happened on the day of the apocalypse?"

I took a slight pause as I watched her freeze.

"Did anything happen to your family?"

"Were your relatives, safe and fine?"
