Humanity had made leaps and bounds over the years, with increased interest in environmental protection and energy. With oil starting to run out and almost being completely gone, because of over consumption, companies had to turn to these alternatives to continue running.

The population of earth had hit a staggering 19 billion back in the year 2053. With the increase in population and lack of land, there was renewed effort to terraform. Many 3rd world countries were pulled up into 2nd and 1st world countries with basic infrastructure, filled with many towering sky sc.r.a.pers and buildings to help fit the growing population.

Thankfully the population had started to level off at this point and the world was just barely handling it. With marked growth in production of food and necessities, it was approaching a golden age for humanity. Poverty had dropped off by a large degree and gone under 1% for the world's population.

With the increase in technology, robots, automated systems and cures for the human body, the average life span of a person had broken the 100 year mark. Some of the richest being able to live up to 140 years.

But with the increase of leisure and accessibility to living condition and food, it led to a new albeit negligible problem. There was nothing to do. Most people these days would go to school looking for research or computer programming degrees, as they were the only avenue for work. There was also, law degrees and doctor degrees, as people felt safer having human contact in these areas.

The government supplied subsidies to family that didn't have jobs, which was enough for them to live comfortably. All physical labor jobs had been taken over by robots and joblessness was at an all time high. Not that it would effect a persons living. To have a job would provide room for greater material gain and wealth.

The world had adapted a new global currency in the year 2060 to accommodate this and other problems, creating the 'credit'. This was a global currency recognized everywhere that people could trade their money for. It had been phased in over 5 years to every country, while getting rid of every other type of currency.

It was an electronic currency that was the same everywhere; no places by the year 2066 used any other type of money. The factories that used to make paper currency and coins were abolished to make more living areas.

The world had reached a state of sustained capitalism by this time.

The rich may be able to make more money and live in luxury compared to everyone else, but there was little opportunity for regular or lower cla.s.s citizens to make it to that level.

Some would call it a paradise, some wouldn't.

This rise in joblessness had led to the explosion of e-sports and streaming, which lead to a worldwide phenomenon. With people not being able to make money other than having jobs such as; doctors, lawyers, engineers and researchers. People turned to gaming.

The advancement of technology had led to more advanced computers and consoles', as well as VR. This had become a popular way for people to earn money by professionally playing and streaming. Companies had latched onto the new trend and helped by organizing ma.s.sive tournaments as well as pumping money into creating new games.

This explosion of games and interest in e-sports had excited every gamer in the world and drew in their new market. It was now socially accepted that everyone under the age of 50 would play a video game. And have that as a main way of making money.

It had been streamlines over the years to such an extent that the economy had been heavily affected by gaming clubs and groups. Companies would buy and trade gaming clubs as if it was a football or baseball team, using branding and other types of advertising to make money.

This had taken over many others sports such as basketball and athletics as major sporting leagues.

As being a professional video gamer had risen to prominence, so had research into new technology. Even though it wasn't expected for another 2 decades, before a fully immersive Virtual Reality Ma.s.sive Multiplayer Online (VRMMO) game to possible come out, a rumor had been going around.

And this rumor had garnered huge attention from the world wide community. And on December 3rd 2067 the launch trailer was dropped, the website updated and information released.

Sim Tech, a relatively unknown company, was going to release the first ever VRMMO, in 3 months.

Shock, disbelief, wonder. All these feelings were expressed by people around the world. Google who had dropped a ma.s.sive amount of money into the research and the ones that proclaimed a VRMMO was another 2 decades out were floored.

As one of the biggest companies in the world, they had been researching for years and had been ones of the first to create the contemporary VR headsets that were still being used today. They thought even if it was one of their top compet.i.tors, it would at least take that long.

Instantly information of this upstart company was brought to CEO's all over the world. The price of the company's stock had already risen beyond belief after the announcement. The website was being visited by billions of people, yes not millions, billions.

A man in a suit with finely done hair and a perfectly sculpted face said to his secretary. She could only nod.

"That's not good enough, pull in some favors; I want to know all of their money movements and recent phone activity. If they contacted anyone, if a contract was signed, if the government was involved in renting land, anything they have done. I want it on my desk in the next hour!"

The man threw the papers on the gla.s.s table and shouted. The secretary bowed her head and left quickly, she knew how important this was. Their company had a major foot hold in the gaming market. They were about to release a new game that would bring in major profits.

They had set up tournaments, events and monetary rewards already. They were set to rake in a lot of money and blow the compet.i.tion out of the water. Their game was that good.

This new announcement had completely derailed their plans, all the money they spent, and killed any hype their game would generate. They had placed a few billion into the creation and set up of the game.

Just as the secretary closed the door she heard something break in the room behind her. She moved even faster.

2 Best friends were sitting in a pc café drinking some red bull. One was playing a popular game, which had just been released and was shouting his head off. His friend next to him sent him a look and nudged him when one of the employees started to make their way over.

The friend who was distracted lost concentration and died.

"s.h.i.t!"

He said one more swear word before staring angrily at his friend. Then his eyes flickered as he saw the employee. Keeping his head down, he exited and went to the internet. He would have to calm himself down for a while.

Once the employee had pa.s.sed, his friend on the side finally started talking again. He was on a well-made website that had little information.

"d.a.m.n, nothing new."

His friend looked over and instantly knew what website he was on.

"How long are you going to refresh that?"

"The trailer only came out 4 hours ago, and there was no other information, other that it was fully immersive. Do you think there will be anything else, with you just staring like an idiot?"

His friend looked away and stopped pressing F5.

"What the h.e.l.l do you think I can do? It's a b.l.o.o.d.y VRMMO for Christ's sake; it's what every gamer dreams of. And once theirs one, more will come. We can start earning money and maybe make it rich. Have you never seen those novels, movies and anime? It's the b.l.o.o.d.y dream!"

The person shook his head, but also had to admit, he couldn't wait for it either. He gave a small smirk as he looked at his friend with his glittering eyes and dumb expression.

"Lucky thing you turned 18 last week right?"

"Actually I heard the company might let people as young as 14 play."

He was shocked.

"But did you see that trailer? All that blood, plus this won't be like the normal VR, if it really is fully immersive, it could traumatize a person. I heard there is a pain setting in the game."

He said it in a whisper as if it was secret information. His friend reached over and smacked him on the head.

"Oww!"

"You've been sitting next to me since that trailer came out, how in the h.e.l.l could you have heard that?"

He just stared blankly.

"Stop that!"

"Haha."

The person then rubbed his head with an aggrieved face.

"Ok, I don't know. But what else could you have in that type of game; if you couldn't control the pain it would be ridiculous!"

His friend thought about it for a second and nodded his head, it did make sense. If it felt real, just being stabbed would cause immense pain. It would be no joke.

After a bit more banter, the 2 got back to what they were doing. His friend jumped back onto the first person shooter and he went back to the website. Pressing F5 again, suddenly something new popped up.

Shocked, he quickly clicked on the new part of the page. The browser loaded for a second and brought him to the new page.

There were 2 pictures. One of a brawny person with bulging muscles and no shirt. He was wielding 2 axes in his hand and had blood shot eyes.

The second picture was of an ally way. Just peeking out from the darkness a black hoodie could be seen. The face under it was obscured but looked female. Other than the head part, the rest of the body couldn't be seen and only 2 glints of sharp light could be seen. They looked like daggers.
