Boy, how I screamed for my life. I was convinced that this d.a.m.ned vet was going to dissect or sell me. I might get jarred and preserved in formaldehyde! I knew at this moment that the angel of death was right to be worried over the safety of this cat's body.
The doctor's hand reached out to me—and unexpectedly scratched me chin.
My moist nose twitched, and I opened my eyes in wide-eyed shock.
“Say…how are you talking?” the vet said. “Did you get hit by something?”
“…Let go of me! Mya mya mya! Let go!”
“What are you? Some kind of wily beast?” the vet muttered to himself.
He continued to rub my chin as he studied me. I shuddered at the sight of him. He was a devil. That vet was a true devil. His brow was furrowed as he completely engrossed himself in his observation, and I felt as helpless as a b.u.t.terfly pinned to a spreading board.
I gave another cry and noticed that little bit of a cat sound came out.
“Mya! I…!”
“Are you a cat or not? What are you?”
How curious was he? I flinched at his dangerously sparkling eyes.
“…I don't know, either! I don't know! Let me go!”
“You're not just a smart cat…no, by the way you talk, you must have some higher intelligent…”
“Hey! Are you listening to me?!” I yelled.
“Let's see…” he said, and poked his finger in my mouth. A cat's vocal organs shouldn't be able to speak like a human's, after all.
I bit down with all my might, and my sharp teeth dug into his nail. The taste of blood spurted in my mouth, but I continued to chew on his digit. I would wreck anyone who dared put their finger in this lady's mouth.
“Nangnangnak!”
“Aaaah! What the…!"
He wrenched away his finger and held his bleeding hand. Oh no. I was suddenly terrified that biting him was the wrong thing to do. I was not in a position to be p.r.i.c.kly and fierce with him. In fact, I should be submissive and beg for my life.
“I'm sorry. I apologize. Please let go of me, doctor…okay?” I said with wide eyes as I groveled.
The vet looked bewildered that I was suddenly bargaining with him. “Oh, I, uh…Really, this is just—!”
“Ah, do you want me to lick it? Does it hurt a lot?” I said hurriedly, but it was meaningless at this point. His hands were already ruined with blood and wounds. A Viking had cleaner hands than that.
“Ah! What are you? I mean, you're a cat, but what are you?!”
“…I'll act just like a cat, okay? I'm just a cat, so just let me go.”
“Do you come from a world where cats talk?”
Of course not!
The vet's eyes trembled as violently as an earthquake's, but I could not give up.
“Please don't tell anyone, okay? Can you keep it a secret from everyone else? I'm sorry for biting you.”
“Ha! ‘Let me go' she says. Well, I have a lot of questions for you,” the vet taunted. He wasn't the type to be beaten. His hand was definitely bleeding profusely now.
“Here, pick one. Do you want me to dissect you, or do you want me to sell you to a broadcasting station? They'd pay a handsome amount for you, wouldn't they?”
There was nothing worse than a person with a good brain using it for bad purposes. Was it payback for me biting him?
I couldn't help myself, but tears started to stream down my furry black cheeks. I didn't even realize I could cry like that, but I did. As soon as he saw the tears marks on my fur, his stopped ridiculing me, and I continued to plead for my life.
“I know how to think!” I wailed. “I'm as smart as a human being. I'm not just a cat. I don't want to be dissected!”
“…Then what are you?”
“I don't know! Let me go! Mya mya!”
I knew I was using an angel of death's vessel as a body, but I was forbidden to say it. I couldn't tell him that I was a person under some kind of magic. The vet was surprised at first, but now he was downright amazed.
“How old are you?” he queried.
“I don't know!”
“Don't you know anything?”
"Of course I do!"
It would be hard to continue to fake this.
The vet gave a dejected smile and scratched his jaw. He stared down at me on the examination table like I was a fish on a plate, then asked a question as if he couldn't resist the temptation.
“Do you want to live with me, then?”
“What?”
“If you prefer to be raised by humans rather than wander around from place to place, then let me raise you.”
That was an extremely dangerous proposal, almost like an invitation. I gave him a deadpan look. No, it was closer to disgust.
“Eugh.”
“That's some reaction. Am I not handsome enough?”
I had never seen a sane person ever utter something like that, and I was convinced that this vet was a bit of a sn.o.b. I couldn't ignore the fact that he was a dangerous guy too.
“Think about it,” the vet grinned, “If you live with me, I'll keep you a secret.”
“Do you think I'm crazy?” I bit back.
“So what if I tell the man out there that you're not an ordinary cat?”
Aahh!
“I'll kill you if you tell him!” I yowled.
“Haaa? How are you going to do that, then?” he said slyly.
“…I'm going to bite you.”
It was a limp threat, and I hung my head in shame as soon as I said it. The vet threw back his head and burst out laughing.
“Pwahahaha!”
“Don't laugh!”
I hated being in a vulnerable position, and at the moment I was literally strapped down with my belly exposed. I was defenseless to do anything, and all I could throw at him were worthless threats.
However, as the vet stuck his hands in his coat pocket and laughed, my eyes caught a glimpse of his name tag pinned to his chest. I could clearly see three characters engraved on it.
I read the name tag to show off how intelligent I was.
“Kang. Si. Yul. Veterinarian!”
“Huh?”
Hopefully, this would cause him to think twice. At least this way, maybe he wouldn't dissect an animal that could read, although selling me to a broadcast station was still on the table. That was still a terrifying option.
“I'm not just an animal see?” I insisted. “So don't attract any attention!”
He pointed to his name tag. “This thing here. You can read the letters on it?”
“D-don't dissect me!”
“…This has to be a trick. What on earth is this animal doing?”
Siyul's face drew closer. He poked me with his fingertips, and when I jerked my head to try to bite him, he had already pulled away.
I was an intelligent creature, and I had to admit that up close, the vet was pretty handsome.
“Can you do magic?” he asked.
“If I knew how to do that, I would curse you first!”
Crazy was still crazy, whether they were handsome or ugly. I shuddered with fear as Siyul's face came closer again.
Whether one was an alien being experiment on, or was a fish on the dining table, it was the same as the fear of being a cat strapped on an examination table. I would have felt better if I could curl up and shudder, but my limbs were restrained. Siyul leaned over to adjust the straps, I struggled even more violently. Was he really going to dissect me? I squeezed my eyes shut and I waited.
"Mya?"
“Alright. I'll let you go.”
My eyes flew open in surprise. Until a little while ago, I thought he was going to cut me open. He undid the straps on me, and I stood up on all fours as soon as I was free. I was even more nervous because I didn't understand his sudden change in att.i.tude. My danger mode was activated and I was ready to flee.
“Wh-what the h.e.l.l did you do!”
At my reaction, Siyul looked at me with even greater interest, and even gave me a small applause in admiration, as if to say Good job!.
“Wow, that reaction is really like a cat's. Let's take a look at this. Your skeleton is the skeleton of a cat. How many organs do you have?”
He smiled as he held up the X-ray to look at it. What would it show? I was dying to know, but he didn't say anything as time pa.s.sed.
He reached out his hand again to touch me again, I hissed and arched my back, my fur sticking out like thorns. No matter what was inside me, I was no different from a real cat on the outside.
"Syaak!"
“What are you? An alien? What planet are you from?”
“No!”
“So you're from Earth, aren't you?”
He was dying to know who I was. He was as eager as a kid who dreamed of s.p.a.ce travel, although right now he was a sneaky veterinarian with an evil smirk on his face.
This curious type of human being was the one that I should be most wary of. Even my weak point, the X-rays, were firmly held in his hands.
