Because the death warrior hadn't antic.i.p.ated that the Black Wind King would suddenly change direction, he was unable to tighten the reins and stop in time. He just charged straight ahead without any chance to react.
It didn’t help that the Black Demon Horse was far too fast.
In the blink of an eye, it had covered a hundred feet.
If he turned around now to take the side path and chase after the Black Wind King, it would be even harder to catch up.
"Forget it, you took a detour, but you'll still have to return to the main road eventually! I'll wait for you up ahead!"
However, the Black Wind King didn’t give him the chance to set an ambush.
When it returned to the main road, he was just a step away from catching up, but the Black Wind King had suddenly managed to pull ahead again!
“Still can’t catch up!” The death warrior was so infuriated he nearly lost his composure.
Wasn’t it supposed to be an old horse?
How could it still run like this!
However, the road ahead wasn’t smooth sailing either, as the Han Family had other people stationed at the intersection.
They heard the rapid sound of hooves pounding through the rain, and one by one, they drew their long swords, lining up to block the entire main road.
They stood ready, fully prepared for what was to come.
The Black Wind King showed no hesitation whatsoever. Like a force capable of shattering mountains and rivers, it charged forward, effortlessly breaking through the Han Family guards' blockade!
Two guards were sent flying on impact!
The speed was too fast!
The force was overwhelming!
This was not the Black Wind King they knew!
The Black Wind King had never been this powerful!
One of the guards looked in the direction where the rider and horse had disappeared, then shouted loudly and angrily, "Cut the ropes!"
Ahead lay a suspension bridge!
The guards stationed at the bridgehead drew their swords and severed the ropes with a swift slash.
The wooden bridge collapsed, its remains crashing against the cliffside with a deafening sound.
The gap between the two cliffs was a full ten feet wide; no warhorse could possibly leap across!
Yet, to the guards’ astonishment, the Black Wind King showed no signs of slowing down!
“What is it trying to do?”
"It can't be trying to jump across, can it? It's seeking its own death!"
"Has the rider lost his mind? Why isn't anyone stopping it?"
“Hey!” One of the guards shouted loudly at Gu Jiao’s galloping figure, "Your horse is about to jump off the cliff! Pull back your reins quickly!"
They couldn’t let Gu Jiao jump.
They hadn’t yet retrieved the secret letter from her!
If Gu Jiao fell, Fifth Master Han’s mission would also fail!
“Stop!”
“You’ll die!”
Their shouts were genuine; they truly wanted to stop Gu Jiao from plunging to her death.
Gu Jiao’s vision was gone, but her senses were still sharp.
She heard the sound of the bridge breaking and felt the fierce, icy wind rising from the abyss.
But she didn’t stop the Black Wind King.
The Black Wind King only accelerated.
She wiped the blood trickling from the corner of her mouth, tightened her grip on the reins, pressed her legs firmly against the horse’s sides, and lifted slightly off the stirrups.
The Black Wind King’s muscles tensed as it leaped into the air!
At nearly the same moment, the Black Demon Horse and the death warrior arrived.
“The bridge is out! The bridge is out! Don’t go!” The Han family guards screamed in alarm.
The death warrior yanked the reins hard, bringing the Black Demon Horse to a sharp stop at the edge of the cliff.
The sudden halt was due partly to the death warrior’s command and partly to the Black Demon Horse’s instinctive aversion to danger.
The Black Demon Horse took a few cautious steps back.
This was a distance that even the Black Demon Horse could not possibly cross.
The onlookers dared not look down.
The Black Wind King and the rider were about to fall off the cliff!
“Ah—” One of the guards let out a startled cry. “Look! It—it—it—”
It made it across!
It surpa.s.sed its own instincts, overcame its fear of the cliff, and leaped over a distance that no warhorse, past or present, had ever dared to challenge!
It was truly the rightful Black Wind King!
The guards on both sides of the chasm were stunned, frozen in place. For a moment, they forgot to react, allowing the Black Wind King to carry Gu Jiao past several Han family guards and continue on its way without obstruction.
“They escaped!” Gasped a guard, clutching his aching chest after being thrown aside.
But none of them moved to pursue.
The youth’s unwavering trust and the Black Wind King’s fearless determination had shown them something invaluable—a glimpse of the most precious spirit found on the battlefield.
They couldn’t quite name this feeling, but their hearts burned with a sense of valor.
They didn’t want to chase anymore.
At least, not at this moment.
……
Fifth Master Han had predicted correctly: the three moves Gu Jiao used to defeat him had come at the cost of nearly all her strength. She had never fought with such a self-draining technique in any previous battle.
But even so, she still couldn’t kill Han Ci.
Han Ci was simply too powerful.
Blood continuously surged up her throat, spilling from the corners of her mouth.
At first, she could still force herself to swallow it down, but eventually, she lacked even the strength to suppress the metallic taste in her throat. The blood flowed freely, staining the Black Wind King’s back.
She persevered purely on sheer willpower.
The Black Wind King wasn’t in much better shape. A normal horse galloping at full speed for twenty or thirty miles would need to rest, and even the fastest cavalry typically covered no more than seventy to eighty miles a day.
In forced marches, a horse might push past a hundred miles, but even then, there would be breaks.
Only in cases of running a horse to death would it travel hundreds of miles without pause.
Two hundred miles.
Two hundred and fifty miles.
Two hundred and sixty miles.
The Black Wind King pushed itself to the edge of its limits time and time again, growing more exhausted with each step, yet each time it gritted its teeth and pushed forward.
By dawn, the heavy rain had finally ceased.
The first rays of sunlight pierced through the thin clouds in the east, sweeping over the mountain peaks and illuminating the quiet, desolate military camp below.
Every day, the soldiers were roused by the pounding of war drums.
But today, they were awakened by the sound of frantic hoofbeats.
At first, they thought it was an enemy attack. Rushing to the camp gates, they were stunned to see a pitch-black warhorse and a blindfolded youth.
One rider, one horse, advancing with the momentum of a thousand troops, shaking the very mountains and rivers in their wake!
Gu Jiao successfully handed the bamboo tube to the right deputy general.
The right deputy general looked at the blindfolded youth and couldn’t help waving a hand in front of his face.
The youth showed no reaction.
The right deputy general was utterly shocked.
Was he blind the entire time?
How had he managed to gallop three hundred miles to get here?
Just as the right deputy general was about to ask about Gu Jiao’s eyes, both the rider and the horse collapsed to the ground in exhaustion.
The right deputy general was startled and shouted, “Someone! Call for the physician—”

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succ.u.mb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
