Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

Gu Jiao entered the courtyard without hesitation, leaving her shoes on the steps. Wearing white socks, she stepped onto the spotless floor and made her way into the main hall.

The disciple invited her to sit on a guest cushion and poured her a cup of cool tea, "Please have some tea, Young Master Xiao."

Gu Jiao accepted the tea with a slight nod, “Thank you. No need to attend to me; I’ll wait on my own. You can go about your tasks.”

“Feel free to make yourself comfortable, Young Master Xiao.”

With that, the disciple lifted the curtain and stepped out.

Gu Jiao rubbed her chin thoughtfully. Not even a word of caution? They trust me that much?

The idea that Gu Jiao would sit there obediently was absurd.

Since she had finally made it to the Imperial Advisor’s lair, how could she not take the opportunity to explore it thoroughly?

At the moment, there was only one disciple in the courtyard. He was diligently sweeping the grounds, but he had barely finished a small section, and it would clearly take him quite some time to complete the task.

Gu Jiao quietly stood up and wandered around the main hall.

The hall was empty and devoid of anything that might provide useful information. However, on the eastern side, there was a small study.

Without making a sound, Gu Jiao pushed open the door to the study, and a faint aroma of books immediately greeted her.

The window was open, letting in ample light.

The furnishings were simple, consisting of a row of bookshelves, a book cabinet, a desk, and a display shelf.

Gu Jiao’s knowledge of the State of Yan’s written language had improved significantly, allowing her to read without much difficulty. Yet, as her eyes scanned the books, filled with cla.s.sics like The a.n.a.lects and The Book of Songs, her head began to ache.

Before long, her attention was drawn to the toys on the display shelf.

Yes, they were toys.

There were miniature wooden weapons: a small wooden knife, a tiny wooden sword, a little bow and arrows, a pet.i.te meteor hammer, a scaled-down nine-section whip, and an adorable little red-ta.s.seled spear.

Seriously? Even the personalized miniature weapons she had made for Little Jing Kong weren't this comprehensive.

Could the Imperial Advisor really have such a childlike side?

Who were these made for?

Before long, Gu Jiao discovered a bound sketchbook placed next to the miniature weapons.

She a.s.sumed it would contain calligraphy or paintings by renowned masters, but when she opened it, it was filled with children’s doodles.

“Huh? What’s this now?”

Gu Jiao set down the sketchbook and picked up a scroll from another compartment on the shelf.

She untied the silk ribbon and spread it out. It was a portrait of a baby girl.

The child had fair skin, delicate features, and was absolutely adorable.

Gu Jiao admired the portrait for a moment. “Hmm, quite cute.”

There were over a dozen scrolls in the compartment. Gu Jiao went through them all and realized they depicted the same person. From an infant to a little girl, it was as if she was watching the child grow up before her eyes.

"Why does this little girl seem so familiar? Have I seen her before?"

The portraits stopped at around age seven or eight.

“Has the Imperial Advisor’s Hall ever had female disciples?” Gu Jiao was thoroughly puzzled.

If this girl wasn’t a disciple of the Imperial Advisor, then who could she be to him?

Could she be his illegitimate daughter, secretly born with someone?

Otherwise, it was hard to explain why so many of her belongings were here.

Aside from the portraits of the little girl, Gu Jiao discovered another painting in the largest compartment of the display shelf.

The painting depicted a warrior clad in black armor, with a tall and commanding figure. The person radiated a valiant and heroic aura, holding a red-ta.s.seled spear in their hand.

However, the facial features of the figure in the painting were left blank.

Still, Gu Jiao recognized the red-ta.s.seled spear—it was none other than Xuanyuan Li’s legendary weapon.

So... this person was Xuanyuan Li?

At the bottom of the painting was a line of text: “In memory of an old friend, 19th of the Second Month, the year of Bingshen.”

The Imperial Advisor and Xuanyuan Li were old friends?

Additionally, Gu Jiao stumbled upon something intriguing—a clay-crafted miniature courtyard. Under a peach tree in the yard sat three small clay figurines, seemingly engaged in cheerful drinking as they raised their cups to one another.

None of the figurines had their faces sculpted, and their clothing was just ordinary long robes commonly seen on men in the street.

Gu Jiao stroked her chin, wondering to herself, One is the Imperial Advisor, one is Xuanyuan Li, and the other… Could it be the Emperor?

Were these three sworn brothers in the past?

“Lord Imperial Advisor!”

The disciple’s voice suddenly called from the doorway.

Gu Jiao quickly put everything back in place.

By the time the Imperial Advisor entered the room, she had already composed herself and returned to sitting calmly on the cushion.

Sipping tea, she cast him a nonchalant glance, "You're back?"

The way she said it made it sound like this was her own home.

Gu Jiao smiled.

If she didn’t feel embarra.s.sed, the embarra.s.sment would naturally shift to others.

The Imperial Advisor sat down across from Gu Jiao.

It was hot outside, and he had worked up a light sweat.

Without waiting for a disciple to pour tea, he poured himself a cup.

"What's the matter?" He asked.

“I came to discuss a potential collaboration with you.” Gu Jiao replied.

He took a sip of tea, "What kind of collaboration?"

Gu Jiao smiled and looked at him, "Does the Imperial Advisor’s Hall have any interest in acquiring the Black Wind Cavalry?"

"Not interested." He answered without hesitation.

Gu Jiao blinked, “Don’t be so quick to reject.”

The Imperial Advisor turned his gaze toward her, his tone calm. “Give me one reason not to refuse?”

The Imperial Advisor’s Hall had no need for the Black Wind Cavalry. Its unique way of existing made it irreplaceable by any other force.

Gu Jiao's eyes darted around mischievously, "The Black Wind Cavalry... aren’t they impressive to ride?”

The Imperial Advisor: "..."

The Imperial Advisor took a big gulp of cold tea.

The fire in his heart needed quenching.

"Our Imperial Advisor's Hall does not involve itself in court politics."

"Are you guilty then?"

The Imperial Advisor frowned slightly, giving Gu Jiao a confused look.

Gu Jiao crossed her arms and motioned with her eyes toward the small study on the eastern side. "I saw it. You, the Yan Emperor, and Xuanyuan Li were once close friends, as close as brothers. Together, you betrayed one brother to kill another."

The Imperial Advisor froze mid-sip, “Are you angry?”

Was that a tacit admission?

Gu Jiao raised an eyebrow and replied, "The Purple Star appears; the Emperor will rise from the Xuanyuan. You and the Emperor were truly bold—one dared to say it, and the other dared to believe it. Xuanyuan Li never expected to die at the hands of the two brothers he trusted most."

The Imperial Advisor remained silent.

Gu Jiao propped her chin on one hand, her elbow resting on the table, and looked at him with a faint smirk, “Imperial Advisor, if it weren’t for your face, I’d probably have taken action against you by now.”

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succ.u.mb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
