The monk executed this move with perfect timing, sealing all of Taoist Qingfeng's escape routes before unleashing the deadly strike.
It was supposed to be flawless.
But the moment that nightmare-inducing cry of “Master!” echoed out, his internal force abruptly reversed course!
His body froze mid-air, suddenly refusing to obey his commands. With a loud crash, he tumbled uncontrollably from the sky and hit the ground with a resounding thud!
Face-first, he landed sprawled out like a pancake!
You little brat, do you have to sabotage your master like this…?
This undignified position was far too embarra.s.sing to bear, so he scrambled to get up as quickly as he could.
But just as he propped himself up with his arms, Taoist Qingfeng's heavy fist came hurtling toward him, landing squarely on his handsome face with unrelenting force.
He was sent flying on the spot——
You little brat, you’re going to be the death of your master!
But on second thought, being sent flying wasn’t all bad. It gave him the perfect excuse to make a hasty getaway!
The monk didn’t turn back to clash with Taoist Qingfeng again. Instead, he used the momentum to leap onto a nearby rooftop, his figure soaring through the air before vanishing into the boundless night.
Pushing his speed to the absolute limit, the monk channeled his qinggong to its peak, leaving the eerie, sinister alley far, far behind him.
He dashed as though his life depended on it, covering what felt like hundreds of miles in a single breath, before finally stopping at a deserted street corner.
Even fighting on a battlefield hadn’t exhausted him this much.
“Huff... huff... huff…”
Leaning one arm against the edge of the wall for support, he propped up his weary body while the other hand clutched at his collar, fanning himself in a futile attempt to cool down.
“Finally lost them... That little tormentor is terrifying…”
Slumping against the wall, he let his body rest fully against its cold surface, eyes closed, as he gulped down deep breaths of air.
Suddenly, a shadow stretched long and thin under the moonlight, creeping closer until it loomed sinisterly at his feet.
The owner of the shadow raised a devilish hand.
A sudden surge of alarm shot through the monk, and he spun around with a swift motion.
Huh?
No one was there?
“Master!”
The little demon suddenly popped out from behind him.
His body froze stiff once more.
The little demon scampered around to the front, tilted its tiny head, and with a cute, innocent expression, said, “Master, it really is you!”
The monk was on the verge of tears.
Why can’t I shake you off even after running so far?
Just how did you manage to catch up?
In this world, there was something called shortcuts.
The monk glanced at the wide-eyed and innocent-looking Little Jing Kong, then turned to look at Gu Jiao, who was nearby, thoughtfully stroking her chin while eyeing him. A thunderclap seemed to strike above his head.
Little Jing Kong excitedly said, “Master, master, master! How come you’re in Shengdu? Did you come to find me? Did you read the letter I wrote to you? Why do you always ignore my letters? Has the abbot returned to the temple? How are Jing Fan, Jing Shan, and Jing Xin? Have the senior brothers missed me?”
Little Jing Kong rattled off questions, transforming into a little trumpet in an instant.
Seriously, not even the entire temple full of monks chanting could outdo him.
The monk wore an expression of utter despair. If you want me to answer, can you at least give me a chance to speak?
“Master, master! I want to introduce you to JiaoJiao!” Little Jing Kong was eager to make the introductions between his master and JiaoJiao.
Gu Jiao approached, stopping beside the pair. Tilting her head to glance at the beautiful monk, she narrowed her eyes and said, “So, you’re the white-bearded old man.”
The monk was baffled, “What white-bearded old man?”
Gu Jiao looked at the little one beside her. “Jing Kong, didn’t you say your master was an old man?”
Little Jing Kong answered earnestly, “That’s right! I’m a little young man, so of course, my master is an old man. He said so himself!”
——“You’re not going to do it, so do you expect this old man to do it?”
Little Jing Kong imitated the voice and demeanor flawlessly.
The monk, who always found excuses to make his disciple do this and that so he could slack off: “...”
“Ahem.” He cleared his throat, performed a single-handed Buddhist gesture, and said, “Amitabha, this humble monk’s dharma name is Liao Chen.”
Gu Jiao: “Heh.”
……
Elsewhere, Xiao Heng encountered Taoist Qingfeng.
He recognized him as the young Taoist Priest who had saved him on the street last time. However, since there were no portraits of Taoist Qingfeng in the library pavilion of the Imperial Advisor's Hall, Xiao Heng did not know his true ident.i.ty.
Xiao Heng greeted him politely, “Taoist Priest.”
Taoist Qingfeng glanced at Xiao Heng, nodded slightly, and then turned and walked away.
Xiao Heng: “…”
As he watched Taoist Qingfeng’s retreating figure, Xiao Heng murmured thoughtfully, “Seems like he doesn’t remember me.”
Truly a virtuous Taoist Priest who did good deeds without dwelling on them.
……
Xiao Heng waited at the alleyway entrance for a while, and soon Gu Jiao appeared, leading Little Jing Kong toward him. The little one hopped and skipped, even more lively than when they had left.
Following behind them was the young monk who had just fought Taoist Qingfeng.
Dressed in a gray monk’s robe, he had a tall, slender build and strikingly handsome features. He held a string of prayer beads in his right hand.
At this moment, he appeared like a benevolent and compa.s.sionate monk, but during the earlier fight, he had resembled a wrathful demon exuding killing intent.
The three stopped in front of Xiao Heng.
Gu Jiao turned to Little Jing Kong and said, “Introduce him to your brother-in-law.”
Little Jing Kong cheerfully responded with an “Oh” and bounced over to stand between Xiao Heng and Liao Chen, extending his tiny gentlemanly hand.
“Brother-in-law, this is my master, Liao Chen.”
“Master, this is my brother-in-law, Xiao Heng.”
The introduction of Xiao Heng’s true ident.i.ty was done with Gu Jiao’s consent.
When Gu Jiao spoke to Liao Chen earlier, she had used her natural voice, but now, with more people around on the street, she switched back to her male juvenile voice.
Xiao Heng was somewhat prepared and greeted politely, “Master Liao Chen.”
Liao Chen performed a proper Buddhist gesture, replying, “Benefactor Xiao.”
The street corner wasn’t the ideal place for conversation, and since there was a dumpling stall nearby, Little Jing Kong couldn’t help but drool as he stared at it. The group decided to sit down there.
“One bowl of just the dumpling skins.” Gu Jiao told the vendor.
The vendor was stunned. In all his years of selling dumplings, it was the first time someone had ordered just the skins.
Gu Jiao continued, “Cooked in plain water.”
The vendor: “Uh…”
Neither Gu Jiao nor Xiao Heng was hungry.
Gu Jiao turned to Liao Chen. “What kind of dumpling filling would Master Liao Chen like?”
Xiao Heng gave Gu Jiao a strange look. Weren’t dumpling fillings all meat-based? It wasn’t like they were sweet rice b.a.l.l.s.
Liao Chen smiled faintly. “Cabbage and pork filling.”
Gu Jiao turned to the vendor and said, “One large bowl of cabbage and pork dumplings.”
The vendor stared at the monk before him, looking even more bewildered.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succ.u.mb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
