Little Jing Kong was exhausted and still hadn't woken up by the time it was already evening.
The senior disciple Ye Qing had taken Old Master Mu to the third floor of the library pavilion.
Gu Jiao and Xiao Heng went to the second floor of the library pavilion to eavesdrop.
The two of them crouched by the window, pressing their ears tightly against the wall.
Gu Jiao: “Can you hear anything?”
Xiao Heng shook his head, “No, what about you?”
Gu Jiao: “I can’t hear anything either.”
That shouldn’t be the case. She had clearly seen them just now—they were right upstairs, directly above them. Why couldn’t they hear anything? Was the library pavilion really that soundproof?
“Keep watch for me.” Gu Jiao said to Xiao Heng.
She was referring to the two disciples of the Imperial Advisor’s Hall who were stationed at the entrance of the second floor.
“Alright.” Xiao Heng replied.
Gu Jiao crawled out of the window on the second floor, grabbed onto the carvings on the exterior wall, and slowly inched her way up to the third floor.
When she finally reached the window on the third floor, she was met with the cold, impa.s.sive gaze of a formidable death warrior of the Imperial Advisor's Hall, who stood silently inside the room, staring directly at her.
Gu Jiao: “…”
“h.e.l.lo, good warrior. Goodbye, good warrior.”
With that, Gu Jiao swiftly climbed back down.
Xiao Heng caught her as she fell, pulling her inside, "How did you get back so quickly? Did you see anything?"
Gu Jiao landed on the ground, clapped the dust off her hands, and exhaled deeply. “I saw it. They’re arguing.”
On the third floor.
Old Master Mu spoke with righteous indignation, “What evidence does your Imperial Advisor's Hall have to prove that it was my Mu Family? My Mu Family has never offended the Imperial Advisor's Hall, so why are we being slandered like this?”
The Imperial Advisor calmly replied, “The divination has made it very clear. It was your Mu Family's doing.”
Old Master Mu laughed loudly, throwing his head back in anger and amus.e.m.e.nt, "Divination? Ha, this is truly laughable! The esteemed Imperial Advisor's Hall is using fortune-telling to arrest people? Without any piece of evidence at all?"
The Imperial Advisor remained unruffled as he responded, "Arresting people based on evidence is the method of the Commandery Office and the Three Departments' Yamen. Our Imperial Advisor's Hall relies on divination and fortune-telling."
What d.a.m.n divination?
In Old Master Mu’s view, it must be that this old charlatan had heard some rumor from somewhere, but couldn’t provide solid proof, so he was using divination to cover it up.
And he had thought the Imperial Advisor's Hall had the courage to arrest him because they held incriminating evidence against the Mu Family.
Now, he wasn’t worried anymore.
Old Master Mu sneered, "Imperial Advisor, it's not that I doubt your abilities, but simply relying on a divination to place the blame on the Mu Family... if this word gets out, it won't be enough to convince the people of the world."
The Imperial Advisor seemed lost in thought.
Indeed, the Imperial Advisor's Hall had really no evidence!
Old Master Mu grew bolder and said confidently, “If you can produce evidence, I’ll give you my life!”
The Imperial Advisor then called out, “Ye Qing.”
Ye Qing responded, “Disciple is here.”
"Bring in the witness." The Imperial Advisor ordered.
Old Master Mu’s expression suddenly changed.
Ye Qing personally descended the stairs.
Gu Jiao and Xiao Heng watched from behind a bookshelf, peering in the direction of the stairs.
Before long, they saw Ye Qing escorting a portly middle-aged man upstairs.
Gu Jiao was slightly surprised, "It’s him?"
Xiao Heng asked, “You know him?”
“Mm.” Gu Jiao nodded.
The Imperial Advisor turned to Old Master Mu, saying, “Head of the Mu Family, do you recognize him?”
Old Master Mu furrowed his brow, "No, I don’t recognize him."
"This man is called Pang Hai, the manager of the underground martial arena in Qi City. He just so happened to be in Shengdu." The Imperial Advisor explained slowly and deliberately, then continued, "Ye Qing, bring the portrait."
Ye Qing took a portrait and handed it to Pang Hai, "Do you recognize this person?"
The person in the portrait was the street vendor who had abducted the Little County Princess.
Pang Hai stared at the portrait for a long time before exclaiming, "Ah, this is... what’s his name... Tong... Tong Wu! I almost didn’t recognize him with a change of clothes! He was one of our top fighters at the underground martial arena, but he left several years ago."
Ye Qing continued, “Do you remember which family hired him away?”
“This…” Pang Hai hesitated.
Ye Qing spoke sternly, “In front of His Majesty, I advise you not to withhold anything.”
Forced into a corner, Pang Hai reluctantly said, “The Mu Family.”
A thunderclap seemed to strike down, and Old Master Mu froze completely, his body rigid in shock.
Gu Jiao and Xiao Heng had been hiding on the second floor of the library pavilion, waiting until the disciples came to close the door, but still, there was no sign of the Mu Family head coming downstairs.
Xiao Heng said, “They might be busy for a while. Let’s head back first and ask Yu He later.”
Gu Jiao agreed. “Alright.”
The two of them left the library pavilion and returned to Qilin Hall.
Little Jing Kong had just woken up and was sitting cross-legged on the bed, staring blankly into s.p.a.ce.
He must have slept for too long and gotten a bit dazed.
However, the moment Gu Jiao stepped over the threshold, he instantly perked up, jumping off the bed, slipping on his shoes, and running over with small, quick steps. He whispered excitedly, "JiaoJiao!"
He couldn’t let anyone else hear him.
Gu Jiao patted his little head, asking, "Did you sleep well this afternoon?"
“Mm!” He nodded vigorously.
Children were full of energy. Even after a whole day and night of fear and exhaustion, a full day’s sleep was usually enough for them to recover.
“Eh? Where’s Little Xue?” Little Jing Kong asked.
Gu Jiao replied, “She’s with her uncle.”
When she was in the library pavilion, she had seen Zhang Dequan carrying the sleeping Little County Princess up to the third floor. By now, she must be asleep beside the Emperor.
Unlike Jing Kong, the Little County Princess didn’t have as much stamina. Gu Jiao figured she would likely sleep until morning.
“Are you hungry?” Gu Jiao asked.
“Yes.” Little Jing Kong answered.
Xiao Heng walked in, glanced at the little one, and said, “What do you want to eat? I’ll have the kitchen make it.”
Little Jing Kong’s face darkened instantly.
If you hadn’t spoken, JiaoJiao would’ve definitely cooked for me!

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succ.u.mb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
