The five bodyguards followed the clues and arrived at the scene, all of them stunned by the b.l.o.o.d.y and brutal sight before them.
“What… what happened here? Who did this?”
These men were battle-hardened warriors, yet such a horrific scene was still a rare sight for them.
If this were on a battlefield, it wouldn’t have been so unusual.
But here, this was just a forest in ShengDu!
The bodyguard from the Dong Family recognized one of the bodies, "This man dressed as a vendor is actually an expert hired by the Mu Family from the underground martial arena."
Everyone was even more shocked.
The Chen Family’s bodyguard carefully inspected the surroundings. He was the most meticulous, which was why he had been the first to find the Little County Princess earlier.
He touched the hole in the tree and said, “The attacker used a long spear, and there are children's footprints on the ground—the Little County Princess was taken away.”
The Yang Family’s bodyguard asked, “Who on earth did this?”
The Dong Family’s bodyguard said, “It definitely wasn’t one of our five families. Although our families sent more than just the five of us, none of us uses a long spear. On that point, we can all agree, right?”
The other four nodded.
Aside from the Dong, Yang, Chen, Fang, and Du families, that left the w.a.n.g, Han, Mu, Su, and Feng families, as well as the Imperial Advisor's Hall and the Nangong Family.
The Nangong Family had just lost Nangong Li and was too preoccupied to properly partic.i.p.ate in the search.
The ones who died were people of the Mu Family, and the w.a.n.g and Su families were aligned with the Mu Family, so they could be ruled out.
That left the Han Family, the Feng Family, and the Imperial Advisor’s Hall.
The Imperial Advisor’s Hall could be excluded; with their status, they wouldn't bother targeting any of the n.o.ble families.
And this wasn’t just a matter of targeting someone—the brutality of this method was filled with a terrifying killing intent, almost like a vendetta.
The Feng Family was also unlikely, as Taoist Qingfeng didn’t use a long spear.
The Dong Family’s bodyguard frowned, “Could it be the Han Family?”
The Han Family did train in spear techniques.
The Chen Family’s bodyguard speculated, "The Han Family and the Mu Family have never gotten along, so it's quite possible."
The Yang Family’s bodyguard sighed, “If the Little County Princess has fallen into Qi Xuan’s hands, we probably won’t have a chance to get her back.”
After all, that was Qi Xuan from the Tang Sect, one of the top ten experts in the underground martial arena of Great Yan.
The Dong Family’s bodyguard let out a cold, sly smile, just like Master Dong’s, "Then why don't we join forces and take down Qi Xuan first? Afterward, our five families can compete amongst ourselves at leisure."
……
Gu Jiao brought the two little ones to a small stream, while Little Nine circled above in the sky.
Gu Jiao dismounted, carrying the two children down from the horse.
When there were no adults around, the two little ones had managed to hold up, but now that Gu Jiao was here, all the grievances they had been holding in suddenly came flooding out.
The Little County Princess burst into tears, "Teacher... I was so scared... They kept s.n.a.t.c.hing me away from each other, and I even fell... Waaaaa..."
Gu Jiao set the red-ta.s.seled silver spear down on the ground beside her, knelt on one knee like a knight guarding her, gently wiped away the tears on the Little County Princess's face, and comforted her, "Don’t be afraid. No one will take you away again."
The Little County Princess threw herself into Gu Jiao's arms, crying loudly.
Little Jing Kong, on the other hand, tried his best to hold back his tears, but they welled up in his eyes.
Gu Jiao pulled him into her arms as well.
Kneeling on the ground with one knee, she embraced both children.
It wasn’t something she did often, and her movements were a bit stiff.
However, that didn’t stop the two little ones from feeling the rea.s.suring strength radiating from her.
It was a kind of faith.
The two children cried until they were exhausted.
The Little County Princess, after all, was only four years old and a delicate little girl. Now that she felt safe, she fell into a deep sleep in Gu Jiao's arms.
Little Jing Kong lowered his head in guilt, saying, "I made JiaoJiao worry. I couldn’t even chase away the bad guys."
Gu Jiao gently patted his small head, her lips curving into a slight smile, "No, you did very well. You protected your friend and yourself. You didn’t make me worry. You are the bravest little man, and I’m very proud of you."
Little Jing Kong’s nose tingled with emotion, “JiaoJiao…”
Suddenly, the sound of a falcon’s cry rang out from above.
Gu Jiao’s eyes turned cold.
“They’re over there!”
A group of people approached through the forest.
It wasn’t just one person, but a crowd.
And it wasn’t just the five bodyguards from earlier, but rather a cl.u.s.ter of guards surrounding the heads of the five great n.o.ble families.
From left to right stood Master Dong, Old Master Yang, Lord Fang, Lord Du, and Lord Chen.
Gu Jiao had seen their portraits before in the library pavilion of the Imperial Advisor's Hall.
Gently, Gu Jiao laid the sleeping Little County Princess on the ground, using her cloak as a cushion. She then said to Little Jing Kong, “Cover your ears and don’t turn around.”
“Mm!” Little Jing Kong obediently complied and sat facing the stream, raising his hands to cover his little ears.
Gu Jiao picked up the red-ta.s.seled silver spear and walked toward the crowd step by step.
Little Nine spread its wings, circling above her with fierce determination, as if just waiting for her command to dive down on its prey.
The group looked at the youth approaching under the moonlight, radiating killing intent, and the falcon soaring above, guarding the youth.
A sense of dread inexplicably rose within their hearts.
One of the guards drew his sword and stepped forward, shouting, “Who are you? Hand over the Little County Princess if you know what’s good for you, or else I’ll make sure there’s no place for you to——”
Before he could finish speaking, the youth thrust a spear straight through him!
The guard dropped to his knees, wide-eyed and speechless, staring at the youth.
With a cold expression, the youth kicked him in the chest and pulled the red-ta.s.seled silver spear out.
Blood splattered across the youth’s face, with one drop landing right in the middle of the youth’s forehead, resembling a blood-red mole.
Master Dong's eyes trembled violently, "Xuanyuan Sheng..."
The youth casually wiped the blood from “his” face, looked at the group with sharp, murderous eyes, and asked coldly, "Who's next?"

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succ.u.mb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
