Su Yuan left the residence with Su Hao and Mu Qingchen.
He instructed Su Hao to board the carriage first.
Now, with just the father and son remaining, Su Yuan questioned sternly, "Why didn’t you stop Mu Chuan earlier?"
Mu Qingchen replied with a question, "Why should I have stopped him?"
"You——" Su Yuan gritted his teeth, "He’s your own brother!"
"I’ve never acknowledged that."
After saying this, Mu Qingchen turned and boarded his own carriage.
Mu Chuan was already inside. When he saw Mu Qingchen getting in, he scooted over to the side, offering, "Fourth brother, sit here!"
He opened the carriage window and noticed Su Hao peeking over from the opposite Su Family carriage, lifting the curtain to get a better look. Disgusted, Mu Chuan stuck out his tongue in mockery, "Ugh!"
"Let’s go." Mu Qingchen ordered the coachman.
The coachman cracked his whip, and the horses started moving.
Mu Chuan asked, "Fourth brother, are you really going to recruit Liulang? With his temperament, I doubt he has any interest in aristocratic families. It’s all Su Hao’s fault for running his mouth!"
Mu Qingchen replied, "Someone has to approach him anyway."
If not him, it would be someone else.
"That’s true." Mu Chuan nodded, "But honestly, being an aide for Mu Family isn’t bad. The Mu Family highly values talent. As long as they’re not those useless freeloaders, the Mu Family treats all their advisors with respect, even as honored guests. In this regard, Grandfather wasn’t wrong. If you can, fourth brother, try to talk to Liulang. You two are so close——I’m sure he’ll listen to you."
Close?
The two of them... had long since drifted apart.
......
Imperial Advisor's Hall.
Shangguan Yan woke up, her body wrapped in bandages, making it difficult for her to move for the time being.
Gu Jiao hung up an IV drip for her.
The previous day, Gu Jiao had inserted a venous catheter in her wrist, so there was no pain when administering the IV again.
Shangguan Yan curiously looked at the hanging IV bag and asked, "Is this water? Are you injecting water into me? When I was in the county, I saw them inject water into pigs like this, and then they’d sell the pigs."
Gu Jiao: "..."
After thinking for a moment, Gu Jiao corrected her, "This is not how they inject water into pigs."
The Imperial Advisor's Hall disciple who was sweeping the room: "..."
Shangguan Yan's surgery had been very successful. If not for the various other wounds on her body, Gu Jiao could have already fitted her with protective armor and let her walk around.
Zhang Dequan stopped by to visit Shangguan Yan, primarily to check on her, but also to share the news that the real culprit had been caught and that Imperial Consort Wan had been banished to the cold palace.
This was meant to give Shangguan Yan some closure.
Xiao Heng had gone to the library pavilion of the Imperial Advisor's Hall.
As the Eldest Imperial Grandson, he had access to all the books and doc.u.ments on the first two floors, except for those on the third floor.
After taking a general look around, he asked the disciple guarding the entrance, "By the way, may I ask where the national books of the State of Yan are kept?"
The disciple replied, "In response to Your Highness, the national books are on the third floor."
Xiao Heng then asked, "Aside from the Imperial Advisor and His Majesty, who else can access the third floor?"
The disciple answered, "There are also the two senior brothers who guard the third floor."
Xiao Heng: "And aside from them?"
"No one else." The disciple thought for a moment, realizing his words were not precise, and corrected himself, "If the Imperial Advisor grants permission, others may access the third floor, but no one can go up on their own."
Xiao Heng: "What happens if someone goes up without permission?"
The disciple responded, "There are eight death warriors stationed near the library pavilion. If anyone tries to trespa.s.s, no matter who they are, they will be executed on the spot."
Xiao Heng asked, "Has anyone ever attempted it?"
The disciple answered, "Yes, quite a few, but not a single one left alive."
It seemed these weren't just ordinary death warriors.
Now the question was, if the security was so tight, how did one of the national books of the State of Yan end up in Little Jing Kong's pile of junk?
Surely, the Imperial Advisor didn’t hand it over willingly to someone.
......
At the Canglan Women's Academy, Gu Chengfeng dropped Little Jing Kong off at Lingbo Academy, "Be good in cla.s.s, I'll pick you up at noon."
Little Jing Kong asked seriously, "Are you picking me up to go to the Imperial Advisor's Hall and have a meal with JiaoJiao?"
Little Jing Kong had asked this question hundreds of times since returning to Linglong Pavilion last night. He asked before bed, when he woke up in the middle of the night to use the latrine, during breakfast, and even while walking on the road.
Gu Chengfeng didn’t have Xiao Heng’s patience, and he couldn’t hold out any longer.
He caved in and surrendered, "Alright, alright! I’ll take you! I'll take you, okay?"
Little kids are really so hard to manage!
Little Jing Kong proudly puffed out his small chest. As expected, except for that bad brother-in-law of his, he could handle anyone!
Little Jing Kong contentedly hugged his book bag and entered the academy!
He sat down in his seat.
The exam results from the previous day were posted in the cla.s.sroom. There was no surprise about who was first——Jing Kong.
The last place, however, had changed——Yan Xue.
While everyone else seriously answered the questions during the exam, the Little County Princess spent her time seriously drawing turtles.
Little Jing Kong sat in his seat for a while, but his little desk mate didn’t show up.
After thinking for a moment, he dashed out of the cla.s.sroom.
He went to the back gate of the academy.
The Little County Princess always pa.s.sed by here, taking a shortcut through the alley to reach the front gate where she got off her carriage.
Honestly, Little Jing Kong thought it was a ha.s.sle. Why insist on using the front gate? Wasn’t the back gate just as good?
Since the Emperor had to attend court sessions, he couldn’t escort the Little County Princess every day, so she was usually accompanied by the imperial guards.
Today was no exception.
"Candied hawthorns—delicious candied hawthorns here!"
The Little County Princess heard the vendor's call, and her mouth started watering.
"I want candied hawthorns." She said to the palace maid beside her, her big eyes wide and cute—not bossy, but soft and innocent, melting anyone’s heart.
The palace maid smiled, "Please wait a moment here, Little County Princess."
She signaled for the carriage to stop and called out to the vendor, "Candied hawthorns!"
The vendor came over with a grin, "Madame, how many sticks would you like? What flavor? Aside from candied hawthorns, I’ve also got candied yams, candied oranges, and candied watermelons!"
The palace maid smiled and said, "I’m not a madame. It’s my little master who wants some."
She then said to the Little County Princess, "Go ahead and pick one."
The Little County Princess leaned out of the carriage window, stretching her little head toward the vendor, drooling over the piles of candied hawthorns, candied this and candied that.
At this moment, Little Jing Kong spotted her and waved frantically.
But she didn’t see him.
Little Jing Kong dashed over.
The gatekeeper didn’t even have time to react.
"I, I, I, I…" The Little County Princess wanted them all.
Just as the Little County Princess was hesitating, the vendor’s eyes suddenly turned cold and sinister.
He grabbed the Little County Princess by the collar and yanked her out of the carriage!
The palace maid's face turned pale with horror, "Princess! An a.s.sa.s.sin!"
The imperial guards drew their swords and rushed forward.
The vendor threw the sticks of candied fruits at the guards, then, holding the Little County Princess, leapt away using qinggong!
"Hey!"
Little Jing Kong lunged forward, baring his small sharp teeth, and bit down on the man’s thigh!

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succ.u.mb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
