Generally, magic cultivators, spellcasters, are considered more powerful than martial cultivators, martial artists, of the same stage.
That is because spellcasters, whom can learn various different spells, are more versatile, and the explosive force they can generate with their spells, is greater.
The bottlenecks that they face from the 1st to the 2nd stage, the 3rd to the 4th stage, the 5th to the 6th stage, et cetera, are also weaker.
However, since it has advantages, it should naturally have disadvantages as well.
A spellcaster's physical body is much weaker than that of a martial artist of the same stage. This can be made up for with elixirs, so it isn't much of a problem. It only adds to the amount of money the spellcaster has to use to get rid of this weakness.
But because they do not need as much battle experience to break through from the 1st to the 2nd stage, the eye of forewarning death that spellcasters gain after reaching the 2nd stage is much weaker compared to the ones gained by martial artists, making it harder for them to sense deadly threats to their lives. This not only makes it harder for them to sense how low their chances are at pa.s.sing their upcoming destiny tribulations; It also makes it easier for them to be killed with sneak attacks than martial artists.
Another disadvantage is that, the explosive force of spells takes up more magic energy, compared to the amount of stamina that the martial skills used by martial artists takes up. This makes them unsuited to long or consecutive battles, and is another reason why they can't gain as much battle experience as martial artists, and in turn, why they can't get a stronger eye of forewarning death.
A 70% chance of success may sound high to some people, but when the remaining 30% chance of failure leads to death, it is actually too low a number. How many people would want to try something if it has a 30% chance of killing them?
But when that is compared the max 90% chance of success that anyone can get, even if they have the strongest of personalities, and the greatest of reasons to hold onto life, that number doesn't seem as low anymore.
Many researchers in higher ranked cities are still stubbornly looking for a way to surpa.s.s that 90% chance, and to allow humanity to smoothly cross over to the 3rd stage, bolstering the power of their race as a whole. Unbeknownst to them, the G.o.d who sends down this tribulation will never allow anyone a perfect 100% chance of overcoming it. He simply doesn't love humans that much.
Gelard climbed up onto the bed and went to Nala's other side. He pushed against her thigh with his little kitty forepaws, and cried, "Nala~ The stupid master is really mean~ Wake up already~ Otherwise, you will really die...".
Then, seeing that there was no reaction, he turned dejected and sat on his b.u.t.t.
Seeing that, Seth felt his heart going a little soft.
He slowly explained, "We already did all we could to raise her chance at pa.s.sing this tribulation as much as possible. We used an elixir to raise her vitality for the next 24 hours, as well as a monster core compatible with her spells."
Although the state of the body isn't as much of a factor to whether a cultivator can pa.s.s their tribulation of death's calling, it is still a factor. A strong body, with high vitality, is better than a weak body, with low vitality. With the body affecting the mind, the mind would be able to last longer against the call of death.
The 'Single Cycle Vitality Elixir' is a elixir that can raise a person's vitality by a set amount for 24 hours. It lets a cultivator's body and mind remain energetic even when their body is in a sleep-like state during their tribulation of death's calling.
It isn't like caffeine, which has a effect that spikes up for a time, and then wanes afterwards. Using that would instead be more harmful than helpful, as it would provide an opening for death to take hold of.
As for the monster core that Seth spoke of...
From the peak of the 2nd stage, to the beginning of the 9th stage, a human cultivator has to absorb the 'remnant soul' inside a monster core to break through to the next stage.
As can be inferred from its name, a remnant soul, is a portion of a soul, a broken soul. Once the remnant soul is absorbed by a human cultivator, that human cultivator's own soul, which was originally indistinct and spread all throughout of his or her body, would become more condensed and corporeal.
The quality of the soul will improve, and that will affect the body. The potential of the body will improve, allowing it to reach higher levels through further cultivation.
Absorbing a monster's remnant soul can even grant the cultivator that monster's signature ability.
The problem is, that even while broken, a monster's remnant soul will still have a remnant of its intelligence. It will instinctively fight back against the soul of the one trying to consume it. If the remnant soul is stronger than the soul of the cultivator, then the cultivator's soul can even be destroyed.
This danger can only be decreased by having the human cultivator cultivate spells that can change his or her own body, into something that the remnant soul might mistaken as its own. This does not have to be a complete change, turning the human into a monster. All it has to do is, for the lack of better wording, make the human cultivator give off the 'scent' of the monster.
For Nala, who mostly cultivates water-centered spells, the monster core that Seth had procured for her, was naturally one of an aqueous monster. To be more exact, it was one of a fish monster's.
"I'm going to stay with Nala until she wakes up (or until otherwise). That will be at least several hours. What are you going to do?" Seth asked.
"Mm... Kitty will go get some pizza!" Having said that, Gelard hopped off the bed and scurried away.
"...Dejected one moment. Hungry the next. This kitty has such casual mood swings." Seth commented.
