Inside what looked to be a large and clean hospital facility, with green tiled walls, and bright white lights attached to the ceiling, there are 2 adult male bodies lying on cold dark green metal beds, in a part.i.tioned room behind a thick gla.s.s wall. The men's bodies were covered from the neck below in a pure white cloth. Only their heads were exposed to be seen. The head of the test subject named Hummer, had its top cut off, exposing an empty hole where the man's brain should have been. The top that was cut off, was lying on a table beside the bed.
Glowing runes covered the dark green beds, shining their lights on their bodies above.
On the other side of the gla.s.s wall, a beautiful woman with an intellectual aura, and long purple hair, dressed in a white doctor's coat, was explaining her experiment to the medical students behind her, while in front of her, there is what looks to be a holographic screen, showing views of the two test subjects' heads from multiple angles. Below the holographic screen is what looks to be a flat keyboard, with two large holes at its ends.
"The purpose of this experiment is to recreate the Possession ability of transcendent cultivators, to allow a soul that has yet to expire, to continue on its life, even after their original body is rendered unusable."
The woman clicked a few keys on the keyboard. The pictures on the screen moved into the background, and then, a transparent image of test subject A, Rajen's, head appeared. The brain within the head became visible.
"The brain is the medium that carries the majority of a human's soul. By transferring the brain, it is my hope, that the soul can restart its life in a new body. For this experiment, 2 men of similar builds were selected to lower the variables for errors."
"Doctor." Suddenly, one of the medical students called out.
"Yes." The woman patiently responded.
The student posed his question. "What is the background of these two test subjects? Were they volunteers?"
The woman shook her head. Then, she continued in her usual emotionless voice. "These two men were randomly captured from the lower world. The report said that they were both 5th stage cultivators. They have no connection to our Saint Sarine Medical City. You do not need to worry."
"Ah. So they were mere cattle." That student said, with a look of realization. "Sorry for disturbing, doctor. Please, continue."
"I a.s.sume you are all familiar with the RMH, the runic medical hand." The woman then inserted her right hand into one of the holes attached to her keyboard. The light of runes lit up within that hole, and then, an identical hand appeared on the holographic display. Meanwhile, the woman's other hand was fiddling with the keyboard.
The transparent head of subject A then turned from one to two. One head was showing its side, and the other head was showing its top.
"Summon scalpel" The woman said.
Then, a holographic scalpel appeared on the screen.
"Merge index finger with scalpel." Following what the woman said, the scalpel and the index finger of her holographic right hand overlapped, turning into something that can only be called a "scalpel finger".
The woman touched one point on the head of subject A facing sideways, while her eyes continued watching the other transparent head showing its top.
The woman's holographic scalpel finger stabbed into the head.
Then, she slowly moved her finger around the head, watching attentively at how far the cut is going in. At the same time, the sideways head was also slowly spinning in the direction opposite to her finger's movement. As if corresponding to that, the transparent head showing its topside view, had a red mark circling around it from one of its sides.
Suddenly, red flashed on the screen, and a mechanical male voice was heard coming from the keyboard.
It said, "Warning, the scalpel has cut into the subject's brain. Undo process to the point before damage was done?"
"Yes." The woman replied.
After her answer, the sideways head on the screen spun backwards a very slight distance, while the red mark on the topside head retracted a bit.
Then, the woman resumed her work, until finally, a complete red circle was drawn on the topside head.
"Realize work." At the moment the woman said those words, behind the gla.s.s wall, more runes lit up on the walls of the part.i.tioned room, and blood suddenly shot out 360 degrees from the head of the test subject called Rajen. Everything above the man's eyebrows, fell off like a cap, revealing the man's brain inside.
Neither that woman, nor the medical students, revealed one bit of surprise. None of the expressions on their faces revealed any shock or horror, as if they were completely used to this kind of scene.
"The stasis bed keeps the body in the same state it was in when it was first put on it. Although this effect isn't perfect, it is enough to greatly slowly down any deterioration of the exposed organs. Unfortunately, because of their intense magic energy consumption rate, they cannot be used for too long." The woman said, as if she was complaining about something. "Now, beginning clipping. Summon shears. Merge shears to index and middle fingers."
A thin pair of shears appeared on the holographic screen, and then merged with the index and middle fingers of the woman's holographic hand, replacing the scalpel.
The transparent head in its topside view suddenly enlarged, while the sideways view was moved aside. With a few more presses of the keyboard by the woman's left hand, the head was split into multiple layers, revealing many of the nerves connecting the brain to the head and other organs.
Then, the woman moved her right hand, and began clipping.
Clip Clip Clip...
Sound effects resounded in the room as her procedure continued. The clipping continued from one layer, to the next. The number of nerves was a lot more than just a few.
Finally, when she was finally done with those, the woman brought back the sideways view of the head.
That view turned transparent as well, showing the connection between the brain and the spine.
Then...
Clip Clip Clip...
When all the nerves were severed at the required lengths, the woman touched the brain on the holographic screen with the fingers of her left hand, and slid it to the hole in the head of test subject B, which had appeared on the screen just now.
"Realize work." With those words, the runes on the walls of the part.i.tioned room lit up again, and the brain of subject A, magically flew over to the hole in the head of subject B, dragging its severed nerves along with it. In seconds, it came to rest in that open head.
The woman continued on with her work. "Summon connectors. Merge connectors with index and middle fingers."
On the holographic screen, she began connecting each of the many nerves of the brain that once belong to subject A, the man once called Rajen, to the split nerves remaining in the head of subject B, the head of the man once called Hummer.
The work continued on for over an hour, and multiple mistakes were made, causing the computer to let out warnings that the woman would immediately act upon and fix.
"Realize work."
Finally, the brain of subject A was fully connected to the body of subject B. No loose nerves could be found, no matter how the woman rotated the head on the holographic screen.
Through the holographic screen, the woman moved the cut off top of subject B's head, back onto subject B's head. She fit it properly so that so long as you disregard the clean cut line and blood stains, it would look like the man had never gotten the top part of his head cut off.
"Begin Healing." With these words, runes shone on the ceiling above subject B's stasis bed, and an intense holy light shone down onto the body of subject B.
Before the eyes of everyone present, the cut line on subject B's head, began to fade away, little by little.
Soon, it was completely gone.
Now, the man looks perfectly fine, and perfectly uninjured.
The healing light continued on for another 10 minutes, before it turned off.
The woman removed her right hand from the keyboard's hole, and then hit some more keys with her left.
The stasis beds in the part.i.tioned room, were the next to turn off.
A green metal shutter came down from behind the gla.s.s wall, hiding the part.i.tioned room.
Lastly, the holographic screen above the keyboard disappeared.
"Now, we will wait for the anesthesia to wear off, before we can tell whether or not the experiment has been a success, and whether or not the subject called Rajen, has successfully reincarnated." The woman then turned around, and showed a smile on her formerly emotionless face. "...Now, it's snack time. Does anybody here dislike tuna sandwiches?"
...
Hours later, a notification sounded out in the room with the keyboard.
"Alert. Selected subject's vitality signs have risen. Subject has regained consciousness."
That woman, and those student, who were conversing about various medical topics, stopped their conversation. Almost simultaneously, they all turned towards the shuttered gla.s.s wall.
"Let us now take a look at the subject." Having said that, the woman fiddled with the keyboard.
The shutter did not open, but instead, a large holographic screen appeared in midair. Displayed on the screen, is the interior of the part.i.tioned room.
Inside that s.p.a.cious room, with its green walls and white lights, are two male bodies lying on two dark green beds. One of the bodies is lying on its bed, unmoving, with a large empty hole where its brain should have been. The other body... has its eyes open, and is staring at the ceiling, seemingly in a daze.
The woman pressed a b.u.t.ton, and then, a microphone icon appeared on the holographic screen.
She began to talk. "Subject A, can you hear my voice? Are your auditory nerves connected?"
Her voice came out in her current room. Yet, it also appeared from all directions in the part.i.tioned room.
The man she called subject A started turning his head left and right, seemingly looking for something.
When he found nothing, he looked down towards his chest, or rather, he looked towards his feet.
His body convulsed once, and then, his legs moved. He got up from the bed and stood. The cloth that was covering his body fell off, revealing a body dressed only in a pair of underwear.
Then, the man began walking around the room in random directions. His steps were a bit unstable, and he completely ignored the other body lying inside the room.
"...His sense of hearing seems to be working. Motor functions are also operational... Sight seems all right, but he does not recognize his former body." The woman made an a.n.a.lysis as she observed the subject.
Then, she asked her next question. "Do you know who you are? What is your name?"
The man froze still.
"Ra..."
The woman became a bit excited. "Ra. Yes. Ra what?" She felt antic.i.p.ation towards the moment that the subject would recall his own name, because that would mean that her experiment has achieved some level of success.
But then, the man's body began shaking all over.
Abruptly, very abruptly, his head jerked around to his side. He was staring straight at the shutter with wide open eyes. The veins in the whites of those eyes seem especially p.r.o.nounced, and caused a shiver to run through the spines of the spectating medical students.
One of the medical students could not help but say, "I-It can't see us, right?".
As if the man could hear what that medical student had said, he rushed toward the shutter, and began smashing at it crazily with his bare hands. Runes lit up on the shutter, and created a transparent barrier, blocking all the blows.
Nevertheless, the sounds still made it through. BANG! BANG! BANG!
The man kept shouting, "Ra! Ra! Ra! Ra! Ra! Ra! Ra! Ra!", like a broken record. Drool kept flowing out of his mouth, and his eyes rolled up. Despite being in such a state, he would not stop striking the shutter.
A disappointed look appeared on the woman's face.
"It failed once again. You can see now the limit we have reached in our Reincarnation project. Even when this experiment was performed on a set of twins, the result was not much different compared to now. Many more experiments will likely be necessary before we make any further progress."
"Doctor, I'm sure you can do it!" One of the students bravely encouraged.
The woman made a wry smile. "The subject of the soul is very abstract. But other than me, there are many other doctors working on this project, and there is never a lack of experimental subjects to go around. 10 years. 100 years. Even if it takes a thousand, it will only be a matter of time before a major breakthrough is found."
Looking at the broken experimental subject, her expression turned emotionless. "That will be all for today. Terminate the subject."
BOOM!!
An explosion sounded out from within the part.i.tioned room. After that, no more sounds could be heard from within...
