"Haha, that means the pots mine" one of the other soldiers smiled and took a big bag of caps off the table they were resting at.
I just shook my head at how nonchalant they were being while there was an army of convicts just across the street.
I just said my goodbyes and started heading south to the Mojave Outpost. And was honestly surprised when they didn't say anything about the land mines I took, which I a.s.sumed were theirs. Or about my new companion.
Speaking of ED-D while I was fixing him up I also checked his audio systems to see if I could find out why he only speaks in beeps. But, there wasn't anything wrong so I could only a.s.sume he was missing some code or was just designed that way.
"You can understand me right" I asked him as he was flying by my side.
He beeped in a high pitch which I a.s.sumed was a yes.
We had been walking for a couple hours now and I had been thinking of way to communicate with him when it hit me.
"Have you ever heard of Morse code" I asked?
He beeped in a lower tone this time for a no.
"Well, then I'll teach you. If you learn it then we will be able to communicate."
I learned Morse code years ago when I was a kid. My parents were relatively well of but, were always busy. So during the summer they would sign me up for boy scouts so they wouldn't have to watch me. And Morse code was one of the many things I was forced to learn while I was there.
Strangely even though I hadn't used it since I was 8 I still remembered everything perfectly. I couldn't help but, wonder if it had anything to do with my 10 Intelligence.
Regardless I only had to explain it to ED-D once before he memorized since he was a robot.
"Do . . . You . . Understand" he hesitantly beeped?
"I do" I smiled.
"Yay, ED-E can talk" he chirps while dancing circles around me.
I watched him in surprise I didn't expect him to have enough personality to use a word like 'yay'.
"So ED-D" I asked "since were going to be traveling together can you tell me about you capabilities?"
He stopped dancing around "Yes Master, I am Eyebot Duraframe Subject E hence my moniker ED-D, though I am curious how you already knew that?"
"That's easy" I laughed "that's because I already knew about you. Why do you think I stopped in Primm?"
"Master went there to get me? Why?"
"Mostly because I wanted a traveling companion, going around by yourself is way too dangerous not to mention boring. Though I guess you already know about that since you crossed pretty much the entire continent before you got to Nevada."
"Master knows about that" he asked sounding shocked!?"
"That isn't all I know, I also know you were created by a guy named Whitely and are currently carrying some very important information for the Enclave to some place called Navarro."
ED-D was so shock he seemed to lose thrust and sputter around for a moment. I had to hold in a laugh, I was already glad I decided to bring him along.
"Is Master a member of the Enclave" he eventually asked?
"No" I shook my head "and I'm sorry to tell you this but, the Navarro base by the NCR a couple years ago."
" . . . I see. However my programming compels me to go there regardless of if an Enclave presence is there or not."
"If your programming is that important then why are you with me right now instead of heading west?"
"I am a Duraframe Eyebot that was designed by the Enclave. I was the prototype for my kind and as such was created from a modified RobCo Eyebot. The Companion Protocol that Master activated was a remnant of the original Eyebot's core programming. As a part of my core programming it supersedes any and all programming that was added later on."
"I see, that makes sense."
"Yes but, I my creator installed a fail safe that will force me to do a factory reset and lock my programming if I fail to complete my mission in a certain timeframe."
"Why did he do that?"
"I am a prototype and was there for untested. Doctor Whitely added that feature in case a bug occurred and stopped me from completing my mission. Which is exactly what happened seeing as I am now following you instead of going to Navarro."
"Well, how long till you reset?"
"Approximately two years."

"I see, well that's plenty of time. I fairly smart so I'll be able to reprogram you before that happens."
"I'm afraid, that I will have to recommend against that Master."
"Why?"
"As I am carrying important Enclave information. I am fitted with a self destruct sequence that will activate if my programming is accessed with inputting the proper code first."
"And only an Enclave member would have that code?"
"Correct."
"Well then it's a good thing I know exactly where to find one of those. There's a man near New Vegas named Arcade Gannon who is a former Enclave member. If I take you to him, he could undo that programming and you get to technically complete your mission by delivering your information to the Enclave."
"That sounds like an excellent solution Master!"
"You know we got a bit off topic didn't we? You were telling me about your capabilities."
"Well Master, as I said I am Eyebot Duraframe Subject E. I have a self sufficient Fusion battery that will produce 500 kilowatts an hour indefinitely. My cha.s.sis is a t.i.tanium Aluminum alloy intended to provide high durability with a light weight. For weaponry I am equipped with a modified Laser Pistol nicknamed the Zapper, that uses 1/4 the energy of a normal Laser Pistol. However my most impressive feature is my Sensor Array.
With optimal weather and terrain my scanners can sense any motion within a two mile radius."
"That's pretty handy considering we're in a giant desert."
After that ED-D and just chatted about anything we could think of. I told him about what was going on in the Mojave and he told me about some of the adventures he had while crossing the Wasteland. I didn't have to worry about paying attention to my surroundings because ED-D would warn me before anything came close, and also because I remembered that there wasn't anything dangerous nearby by except for a few stray Ghou-.
"Master! I'm sensing two targets entering my range!"
"Which direction?"
"Just South of us."
"Great, the exact same way we're headed."
"Yes, if we continue moving at the same speed we will meet them in approximately 34 minutes."
"Can you tell me anything else about them?"
"No master" ED-D beeped "my sensors only allow me to sense motion and nothing else. Though they are moving erratically and seemingly without any purpose."
We kept walking but, I got my Varmint Rifle ready in case we needed to fight. And just like ED-D said around half and hour later I could see two silhouettes in the distance. I crouched down and took out my Binoculars to see what we were dealing with.
It was Ghouls, they were twitching around and sniffing as they ambled towards us. They looked disgusting, way worse then they ever did in the game.
Their clothes were rotted and they were basically named. And their skin was so horrible they looked like burn victims.
I checked VATS and my vision zoomed in even further. Which was a big mistake I had to look at every gory detail of their bodies. I selected my targets and exited it as soon as possible so I wouldn't have to look at them anymore.
The Ghouls were extremely far away and I only had a 30% chance to hit, so I aimed all three of my shots at the same Ghouls head.
My shots fired and just like I expected my first two missed. The third landed on the Ghouls torso knocking him back. But, I must not have hit anything vital because he only staggered a little before screaming and charging in our direction with his friend.
It would take at least five minutes before I could fire a shot in VATS again and my rifle didn't have a scope. So I put my Rifle back and drew my Shotgun to deal with them once they got close.
Even though though they were thousands of feet away, they never tired and kept charging at full sprint. I guess their minds were so far gone they couldn't even feel pain or fatigue anymore. Soon they got close enough to hear their ragged breaths and grunts.
I was ready to fire once they were within 100 feet, close enough that the spread from my Shotgun wouldn't go too far.
"ED-D since your weapon is weaker you go for the one I already shot."
"Yes, Master" he acknowledged.
I fired and could see blood flying from where the shots landed. But, the Ghoul didn't shot and kept charging. I moved my finger to the other trigger, my Caravan Shotgun was a double barreled one with a trigger for each barrel. So I only had one more shot before I had to reload.
While I was waiting for the Ghoul to get even closer to ensure a kill. ED-D was firing a salvo of lasers at the other Ghoul, and after three shots it collapsed into a pile of ash.
As that was happening the last Ghoul was close enough for me to hit its head without worrying.
Bang
It's head exploded as the lead pellets buried their way into its skull.
I dropped the Shotgun and wiped the sweat from my brow. That was way too intense the Ghoul was only a couple feet from me when I fired. If I missed I wouldn't have had any time to draw my Pistol.
"Master, the target has been eliminated" he danced around me again like a puppy looking for praise.
"Good job ED-D" I patted him "Now let's hurry up and get out of here. Those guys really stink" I said looking down at the dead Ghouls.
