Wen Boli was stunned looking at Wen Tian. His face changed from shock to rage. "What are you saying? Is this how you see your father?!"
Fu Youqin gently pushed him. "Speak less."
Then she took Wen Tian aside. She looked at his pale face and red eyes. She touched his face in distress. "Your father is just worried about you. Have a servant send a message the next time you come back late.
"You have to wake up early tomorrow. Let Daifu change your dressing so you can rest early." She patted Wen Tian's back. Then Fu Youqin pushed him out and had Daifu light his way with lanterns.
Wen Tian obediently went to the door. But before he left, he couldn't help but turn his head back to look. He saw Wen Boli frowning deeply. His face was unpleasant looking at his wife's back.
Feeling Wen Tian's gaze, Wen Boli's face went stiff. He tried to hide his expression by pulling in the corners of his mouth, but that made things worse. He put on a fatherly expression. "Go back and rest early."
Wen Tian clenched his left fist with all his strength. He suppressed his impulse. He told himself that now was not the time to confront him. Then he straightened his back and walked outside.
Back in his courtyard, Daifu brought hot water to wash his body. Putting on soft and close-fitting underclothing, Wen Tian buried himself in his quilt.
Seeing that he was asleep, Daifu blew out the candles on the table and retreated outside.
As the footsteps faded away, light and faint sobbing sounds emerged from the dark room. Wen Tian tightly bit his lips. Salty tears overflowed from his face.
His previous life's events circled in his thoughts like a carousel of horses on a lantern. His powerlessness and loss of life only to regain it back put him in a complex turmoil. He could be strong and calm during the day. But at night, when there was no one around, he was on the verge of collapse.
Especially when he just saw the person he hated the most.
