The servant looked at the Empress sitting by the window, reading for another whole day, and couldn’t help sighing in her heart. The Empress was always like this— neither hurried nor slow, neither cold nor indifferent, never actively competing for favour. The servants were anxious when they saw her demeanour, but the Empress seemed to not have the slightest idea about it and never tried to win the affection of His Majesty.

When His Majesty came to Funing Palace to spend the night on the 1st and 15th day of the lunar month, the Empress hardly even smiled, let alone her trying to win his favour. His Majesty had frequented the Funing Palace on these 2 days for many years and it was said that even though the Imperial Consort had used dirty tricks in bed to seduce His Majesty, it didn’t stop him from coming.

Mu Mingtang was absorbed in reading when suddenly, she felt that there weren’t any movements behind her for the longest time. Turning around, she saw that Xie Xuanji, had at some point, arrived at an unexpected time.

Mu Mingtang was stunned for a moment before she immediately put away her expression and stood up to greet him, “Your Majesty.”

Xie Xuanji had been standing here and watching Mu Mingtang for a long time. Of course, he did not miss the flash of reluctance when she turned around and saw that it was him.

What was she reluctant about? Who did she want to see? He was an Emperor. He made her, a merchant girl, his Empress and gave her the glory that other women could only dream of, so what else was she dissatisfied with?

Xie Xuanji was displeased, so his tone was naturally tinged with hints of displeasure, “What is my Empress reading to be so engrossed to this extent?”

“It’s just another book,” Mu Mingtang didn’t want to talk anymore and quickly changed the subject, “Isn’t Your Majesty going to Imperial Consort Wanyan’s palace today? Why the sudden arrival at the Funing Palace?”

Xie Xuanji stared at her and suddenly asked, “Seeing how the Empress is mentioning Wanyan Duo, are you perhaps jealous?”

“How could I?” Mu Mingtang said with an impeccable smile, “I am the Empress and it is my duty to persuade Your Majesty to treat everyone in the harem equally. How could I knowingly commit such a crime and behave like a jealous woman? It’s getting late and the Imperial Consort must be anxious; Your Majesty should tend to her quickly.”

Clearly, Xie Xuanji was the one who asked such a pointed question. He had imagined Jiang Mingwei to be calm, quiet and not arrogant nor jealous. But when these words came out of Mu Mingtang’s mouth, he was displeased for some reason, “Do you really have nothing to say to me?”

Mu Mingtang continued to lower her head and said quietly, “This humble one respectfully bids Your Majesty farewell.”

Xie Xuanji left in a rage. After he left, the palace servants came in from outside with pained and regretful expressions, “Your Royal Highness, have you quarrelled with His Majesty again?”

“How so?” Mu Mingtang casually fiddled with the incense burner next to her and murmured inaudibly, “Why should I be the one who quarrels with him?”

The palace servant was very disappointed, “Your Royal Highness the Empress, you cannot afford to be so careless anymore. The lady in Jiaolan Palace is always seducing His Majesty and new beauties have moved into the six palaces both from  the east and the west. If you remain indifferent to His Majesty, what if the one in Jiaolan Palace gives birth to the Emperor’s eldest son?”
