The autumn cold came quickly without warning. Many suffered from frostbite and colds due to the abrupt change in weather, but the palace also changed their clothing selections to thicker fabrics.

However, the winter that year not only came early as well, but it was also colder than ever as it was already snowing by October. The capital was not located in the north so it rarely ever snowed in the previous years, but now the snowflakes were already falling from the sky. They melted as they fell and finally landed on the ground, turning into water. When it freezes overnight, the ground would be full of icicles the next day.

Mu Mingtang was wearing a vermilion skirt with a purple coat that had large sleeves. Her collar and cuffs were covered with fine fluffs to keep her warm. She stood in front of the window, looking at the white layer of ice and snow outside, unable to hide her worry.

“Just snowing is already a ch.o.r.e, but it’s even so cold now, forming an entire road of ice on the ground. With how cold it is now, I don’t know how many people have already frozen to death.”

Xie Xuanchen came from behind her and also raised his head to look at the grey sky, “That’s not the only thing.”

Mu Mingtang turned her head and looked at him puzzled, “What?”

Xie Xuanchen’s side profile was glowing, reflected from the light from the snow, and the bridge of his nose seemed to exude a different sort of radiance, “It’s not just us. The snow that falls on the gra.s.sland won’t melt and their place is far more severely affected than ours.”

Mu Mingtang suddenly gasped. The Central Plains was an entire region that thrived based on their agriculture. Regardless of the poor and rich, it was common sense to stockpile their grains for the winter. However, the gra.s.sland nomads rely on hunting and grazing to get by. In such cold weather, many sheep would be frozen to death, which meant that they were truly without food.
