Book 1 Chapter 6: Superhuman Genome Warrior!
In the early stages, mutant ants weren't very formidable creatures, however in the later stages, every single one of them were ridiculously horrifying existences. Later into the apocalypse, mutant ants were far more fearsome than the likes of mutant lions or tigers!
Scientists estimate that ants could very well lift up to four hundred times their bodyweight!
Imagine how terrifying a boar sized ant would be?
"This ant is still quite small, only the size of a fist; it should amount to the strength of ten zombies. In the next month, when the virus within its body further evolves and its body increases to the size of a football, it would be far more terrifying, able to strike out with the force of a hundred zombies."
Ye Chen's eyes were gleaming "If I could capture it and have its genes extracted, I could very well become a superhuman genome warrior!"
Superhuman Genome Warrior was a t.i.tle bestowed upon powerful fighters in the later stages!
Ye Chen could still remember in his previous life, the ten most powerful superhuman genome warriors. Each of them was ridiculously strong, able to topple skysc.r.a.pers with a simple punch, completely exceeding the understandings of normal men. They were acknowledged as the strongest among the new human race!
"Once I have it captured, the chance for me to become a superhuman genome warrior will be secured." Ye Chen was inwardly ecstatic, even though the requirements of becoming a superhuman genome warrior were staggering. Only one amongst a thousand fortunate survivors had the capability of adapting to the genes of a mutated creature, attaining the t.i.tle of Superhuman Genome Warrior! The fortunate survivors were of course all people who were unaffected by the initial viral infection, possessing extraordinary immunities to begin with, to be that one amongst a thousand was an exceedingly monumental feat.
However, Ye Chen was confident in his own capabilities.
In his previous life, he too was a superhuman genome warrior, although he fell short when compared to the ten strongest, he excelled in multiple fields, garnering himself a modest amount of fame.
After a brief reminiscence, Ye Chen carefully closed the room door, sealing it in its own s.p.a.ce. He would return to capture the mutant ant when his strength was sufficient!
After closing the door, Ye Chen headed for the next room that was ajar. Peering past the door, what came into view was a room that was deathly still.
However, Ye Chen did not relax his guard, through his sense of smell; he could tell that the room reeked of blood, there were definitely zombies in the room, and not just a few….
Ye Chen was slightly nervous as he attempted to use his foot to gradually push the door open. As his foot touched the door, he felt a ma.s.sive pressure weighing upon him; he softly took a deep breath before applying more pressure towards opening the door. In the following instant, time seemed to grind to a crawl.
The door opened little by little, eventually revealing seven to eight silhouettes, these silhouettes were inert like stone statues, as the door opened, all their heads turned.
In that instant, Ye Chen could feel his heart violently convulse, without the slightest hesitation, he spun around and madly dashed. Pushing his legs to the limit, it was as though his feet had sprouted wings, rapidly carrying him towards the stairs in the blink of an eye. What followed was a resounding fit of sinister snarling, accompanied by multiple figures in hot pursuit.
"Dammit!" Ye Chen's facial expression was unsightly, he only estimated four zombies at most, how could he have imagined that there were seven or eight in the room. Against those odds, he was as good as dead!
Even the single bottle of gasoline he was carrying had already been used up, only the watermelon knife remained.
After fleeing past the stairs, Ye Chen scrambled into the room he had previously used for killing zombies and slammed the door shut behind him, immediately engaging the locks. A short couple of seconds later came a cacophony of roaring followed by a relentless battering of the door.
It was fortunate that the doors weren't very wide, only affording four zombies at most to simultaneously hammer on it, enabling it to stall the zombies for a decent amount of time.
Easy there! Be calm!
Ye Chen continuously reminded himself and calmed down within moments. At times like these, losing one's cool was fatal. With his body sweating profusely, he bitterly contemplated with furrowed brows. Moments later, his eyes lit up as he turned heading towards the bedroom.
Within the bedroom, he came upon a large white bed draped in immaculate bedding. Standing before the sizable bed, he mustered all his strength and gave it a push, shoving it a moderate distance away. Delighted, he began moving the bed straight towards the room's entrance, not intending to obstruct the door; he halted just three feet away.
Immediately after, he entered the other bedroom, returning with another similar bed in tow. Stacking one bed upon the other, their combined height reached about a meter. The stacked beds served as an obstacle between the entrance and the living room. Even though the zombies had impressive jumping capabilities, the obstacle would still slow their entry into the living room by a few seconds.
Those crucial few seconds, were just what Ye Chen was aiming for!
He entered the kitchen and sure enough, he located two gas cylinders within the cabinet beneath the stove. He hurriedly unplugged one of the cylinders and brought it beside the beds, releasing the propane gas within. With a high pitched sizzle, the thick scent of propane started permeating the entire living room.
Ye Chen closed off one of the bedrooms, stopping any further gas from leaking into it; afterwards, he approached a lamp. Flipping on the switch, he confirmed that the electricity was still running. The apocalypse struck only just recently, therefore the hotel still had a power supply.
Ye Chen pried open the power socket and proceeded to alter the switch's contact area till it was faulty, after which he placed everything back into its initial position. Due to the switch being of a higher quality, he had to lean a stool he found on it, adding the remaining frying pan on it for added weight. With a broken half of the mop, he positioned it behind the door in a way that caused it to be knocked away as the door opened.
Additionally, he found a clothesline pole within one of the rooms, which he placed leaning between the mop and the frying pan.
Finally done with his preparations, Ye Chen glanced at the door. Along with the visibly trembling door, the whitewash lining the walls nearby began to crack and crumble, falling to the ground in large speckles; it wouldn't be long before the door was rammed open.
Ye Chen wetted a towel in the kitchen, covered his mouth before diving into the room he shut prior. Within a minute, he could hear the bang of the door being forced open, followed by a deafening boom. The surrounding gla.s.s windows completely shattered, blazing hot air seeped in from the cracks of the door.
Ye Chen felt a tinge of glee; everything had went according to plan, starting with the opening of the door, knocking the broken mop causing the clothesline pole to slip, hitting the frying pan and flicking the faulty switch which resulted in an electrical spark.
Within a tightly shut room saturated with propane gas, the slightest spark would ignite into a violent explosion!
Ye Chen waited for things to settle, before slowly exiting the room with the watermelon knife at the ready. The entire living room was steeped in a chaotic mess, with the gla.s.s table completely shattered, sofas, beds and many other pieces of furniture charred into a smoldering black heap, some of which were still burning.
Ye Chen grinned bitterly, if seven or eight more zombies were to come, with the state this room was in, there was no way he could fend them off. However, he did not mind it terribly; this was after all a hotel, there were plenty more rooms to exploit.
Walking over, he inspected the zombies crumpled around the stacked beds. All eight of them were undoubtedly dead, two amongst them who were closest to the gas cylinder were so heavily incinerated that they were reduced into a shrunken black ma.s.s, the rest of them were wafting with a nauseous fume of cooked flesh….
Ye Chen scouted the outside of the room, after making sure that the explosion had no attracted any additional zombies over, he returned inside to dissect the corpses.
Finally done, Ye Chen miraculously found two pieces of mutagenic flesh while harvesting the zombie corpses. This was undoubtedly an unprecedented stroke of luck; one of the pieces was just the size of a fingertip, yet the other, was the size of a fist!
Ye Chen was ecstatic, due to mutagenic flesh being hidden behind a zombie's heart and the fact that the gas cylinder was half full, the explosion did not completely obliterate the zombies, or else these pieces of mutagenic flesh would have been history.
After rinsing the mutagenic flesh, he placed the fingertip sized piece in a clean bag. This piece would later be given to his younger sister, as for the fist sized piece, he sliced it into three slices, gradually consuming them.
"This fist sized mutagenic flesh should raise my strength many times over!" Ye Chen eyes were gleaming with delight. Eventually, after he had digested all the mutagenic flesh, he could distinctly feel the ma.s.sive increase of his physical strength. It felt like his body had lightened by dozens of pounds, with one hand alone, he could lift himself off the ground into a backflip.
Right now, Ye Chen possessed the strength comparable to a zombie's.
"From now onwards, against a pack of two or three zombies, I won't even need to use gasoline to take care of them." Ye Chen was excited as his increase in strength meant that he could better protect the people close to him.
This was also the reason why he had ate most of the mutagenic flesh himself, instead of sharing it equally with his sister. After all, the one doing the day to day hunting would be him; he needed to be strong enough, before he could ensure her safety!
Ye Chen looked at the time; he decided that now was a good time to head back. He picked up the watermelon knife and headed back to his room.
Knock knock!
"Brother." Ye Zhu heard the knocking and made sure it was her brother through the peephole before relaxing and opening the door. Upon opening the door, Ye Zhu was shocked to find her brother covered in zombie blood, the man's eyes conveyed a slight sense of exhaustion, his sweat soaked clothes clung to his body.
Ye Zhu stared at her brother in a daze, gazing upon the person who had protected her ever since she was a child; tears instantly began welling in her eyes, ignoring his squalid state, she jumped into his embrace.
Ye Chen rubbed his younger sister's head, tousling her beautiful hair with a smile, he said: "There, there. You're all grown up now, you shouldn't be crying like that."
Ye Zhu slowly released him and lowered her head, after a while, she suddenly exclaimed: "Big brother, in the afternoon….l-let me go with you!"
