Chapter 154 - Grandaughter-in-law Is So Submissive

There was only one person old enough to possibly be Li Luxian's grandmother. She looked gentle and smiled frequently. 

A middle-aged woman was the most vocal, engaging guest and closest to Li Bai Yuan. Chen Yi accurately guessed her to be Li Luxain Aunt, Ye Zan.

There was another girl sticking quite close to grandmother, her facial features looked somewhat similar to Ye Zan; Chen Yi concluded her to be Li Luxain's cousin, the infamous Li Min. Infamous because Li Yuan didn't have anything nice to say about her.

In fact, Li Yuan ate away Chen Yi's ears day and night blaming Li MIn for all the wrongs in the world. 

Li Luxian coughed slightly garnering Li Bai Yuan's attention. Spotting her favorite grandson, her smile widened so much that her teeth peeked out. "Li Luxain, you finally know to come to see grandmother." She wanted to act angry at first and make him apologize. But seeing her grandson after so long, all such intentions tumbled down and she gestured at him earnestly, "..come to grandmother. Come here!"

Li Luxain obliged, Li Bai Yuan grabbed his face and kissed his forehead. Releasing him reluctantly, she complained. "It's been so long. Other grandchildren visit me occasionally, it's been ages since I saw your face. Why haven't you come to see this old woman?"

Standing away Li Luxain replied with a respectful tone. "I have to look after the family business."

"Quit your excuse, I won't accept them this time. What too you so long?"

Li Luxain stayed silent for a while before looking at his side. 

Li Bai Yuan followed his eyes and her smile faded to some extent. "Is this... your wife?"

"Greetings to Elder. I hope you are doing well."

Li Bai Yuan's face was like a blossoming flower upon seeing Li Luxian. Finding Chen Yi standing by his side, some color faded away. "Was it you that caused Li Luxain to be late?" 

The air became somewhat stiff. The clamor silenced down as everyone regarded Chen Yi And Li Bai Yuan's interaction with interest, ceasing all other activities.

Despite sensing the tension, Ye Zan's smile didn't falter a bit. And she looked on silently with no intention to say anything to smoothen things. As a host, she behaved as if she was a bystander. 

Chen Yi was embarra.s.sed. "It's me who would have to apologize."

"So it's really you. How long have you been married and you are already getting in the way of my grandson's relationships? Causing him to be so late to meet his own grandmother."

If the place was silent before, now there was dead silence.

It appeared Li Bai Yan really didn't like this granddaughter-in-law.

She was someone who was always smiling and would rarely get angry or raise her voice.

Li Luxain's felt uncomfortable at the sight of Chen Yi bowing down her head. "Grandmother, that's not what happened. Let me explain."

"Silence." Before he could speak any further, Li Bai Yuan glared at him. "I do not want another son of the Li family talking back to elders for his wife."

It went without saying that Li Shanguaan was the one implied here. 

Chen Yi flinched. Li Luxain was about to open his mouth and explain but a light pain pierced his palm. Looking down, it was Chen Yi who had pinched him. 

She continued to keep her head down, not daring to meet Li Bai Yuan's eyes. 

Was she telling him to stay quiet? 

  "The fault lies with me. I earnestly apologize." Chen Yi went further on to add. "If Elder wants to punish me, I'll have no objection."

With Chen Yi being so submissive, Li Bai Yuan found it hard to stay angry. She never had a severe personality, to begin with. It was only when those dearest to her would hurt her first, she would put on a hard mask. 

"It's good that you realize that."  She said and finding Chen Yi standing with her head down, she felt somewhat guilty and took the initiative to ask. "What's your name, child?" Her voice had grown softer.

Chen Yi blinked and finally looked up, bringing light to her features. As if a child receiving candy, her eyes lit up at this t.i.tle hint of acceptance from Li Bai Yuan. "Chen Yi. Replying to Elder, my name is Chen Yi."

"Chen Yi..." Li Bai Yuan mulled over, thinking this girl didn't look so bad. "Why don't you call me Grandmother?" Li Bai Yuan had expected the first thing Li Luxain's wife would do was to call her 'grandmother this', 'grandmother that' as if to thrust it into her face that she had married her grandson and Li Bai Yuan could do nothing about that.

Earnestly sucking over her to win her approval and stabilize her position. Although that didn't happen, Li Bai Yuan was still not happy.

"This..." Chen Yi looked embarra.s.sed. "I didn't know if that would be appropriate." 

"Nonsense. Why would that not be appropriate?" Despite herself, Li Bai spoke up. "Just call me Grandmother. Since you have already married Li Luxain, you are already a part of the family."

Li Fu Tong has accepted Chen Yi, how could Li Bai Yuan deny her? It was just that Li Bai Yuan had the mind to make it hard for Li Luxian's wife. 

Who told this girl to be this arrogant to go around and marry her grandson without first seeking her approval? She needed to be taught her place.

But from the looks of it, it appeared this girl Chen Yi wasn't like how Li Fu Tong had described. Confident, headstrong, and bold. No, she was quite the opposite. Li Fu Tong and Li Bai Yuan preferred different sets of traits. He would appreciate boldness, she would appreciate submissiveness. 

There was nothing for Li Bai Yuan to teach. 

This girl Chen Yi already knew her position. 

Li Bai Yuan didn't like her.. But she didn't find her too disapproving either.
