NEW AMERICAN EDITION, CORRECTED, WITH ADDITIONS.
One volume, 12mo.
This volume comprises a copious collection of legal and other terms which are in common use, with English translations and historical ill.u.s.trations; and we should judge its author had surely been to a great "Feast of Languages," and stole all the sc.r.a.ps. A work of this character should have an extensive sale, as it entirely obviates a serious difficulty in which most readers are involved by the frequent occurrence of Latin, Greek, and French pa.s.sages, which we suppose are introduced by authors for a mere show of learning--a difficulty very perplexing to readers in general. This "Dictionary of Quotations," concerning which too much cannot be said in its favour, effectually removes the difficulty, and gives the reader an advantage over the author; for we believe a majority are themselves ignorant of the meaning of the terms they employ. Very few truly learned authors will insult their readers by introducing Latin or French quotations in their writings, when "plain English" will do as well; but we will not enlarge on this point.
If the book is useful to those unacquainted with other languages, it is no less valuable to the cla.s.sically educated as a book of reference, and answers all the purposes of a Lexicon--indeed, on many accounts, it is better. It saves the trouble of tumbling over the larger volumes, to which every one, and especially those engaged in the legal profession, are very often subjected. It should have a place in every library in the country.
