01. That Day

My favorite flower is wisteria.

However, I have never seen it in this world even once.

The country branded as the Flower Capital doesn’t have it either.

Is it possible that I may not see it ever again?

I, Nishiguchi Haruto, has been in an agricultural university for just about two years.

At the university, I studied about cross-fertilization of flowers, intending to inherit my family’s flower shop in the future.

I fondly spend each day being around my favorite flowers and kicking up a fuss with my friends – I can’t help hoping that this kind of life will go on forever.

That is why I never expected such a sudden change. Not in the least.

That day, I inadvertently fell asleep in the library and it has become pitch dark when I woke up.

I put away the ill.u.s.trated encyclopedia and textbooks then hastily left for home.

When I went out of the library in a rush, my left foot sunk without warning, it’s as if the floor isn’t there at all.

Just as I was astonished, my whole body sunk in the blink of an eye.

I felt the sensation of falling but it was impossible for me to even let out my voice.

I don’t know whether it lasted for just ten seconds or an hour, but my body hit the ground eventually.

“Ah, I may be dying.” is what I thought when I felt the excessive impact.

The last thing I sensed were the faint, sweet smell of flowers and the warm rays of the sun.
